camping-with-toddler

I really thought because of all the mishaps following up to us leaving, this would be a crazy trip … However, it was fairly low key and proved that camping with a toddler is feasible and actually a lot of fun!

We got to the campsite and my lovely husband was complaining. Nice change, I’m usually the complainer. We got all set-up and noticed that if someone showed up to the site next to us, we would literally be on top of each other. I’m not a huge fan of strangers and still remember the camping trip we took on an anniversary years ago where the family right next to us had a boatload of rude children and one literally ran around our tent, got his foot caught in the tent rope and fell. Shook the whole tent and let’s just say, not a romantic anniversary weekend.

We got to see the forest rangers show-up in their bulletproof vests that night. I was wondering why they were walking into the trail by the dumpsters. I later found out they had a tranquilizer gun and were looking for a bear. Now, the bear around here are not grizzly’s. I mean, they aren’t Yogi either and so they need to be taken seriously. Like don’t leave your pic-i-nic basket in the tent, don’t go poke the bear, etc. But, I had to chuckle when a couple walked by and said under their breath, but loud enough to make a snarky comment I would hear, “let your dog run loose, they will become bear food.” I kept picturing this ninja bear jumping out of the forest. My dog is a pit mix. She sounds huge and scary. We would know if a bear was in the area.

We never saw the bear, I even went on a twilight hike with Abby the next evening and no bear. Chipmunks, no bear. We did possibly hear the bear trying to get into a dumpster that following night. I kept saying it would make cool footage for my adventure blog. The only bear noises we heard was my husband. He said, did you seriously think the bear was taking a nap in our tent?

The First Night-

That first night in the tent was the first night Abby had ever slept away from home … It was a little rough getting her to settle down. I was hoping for some quiet parent time by the fire … But, that didn’t happen Friday night or the rest of the trip. We all ended up going to bed at the same time and dealing with the mattress not being able to hold our weight. It was like being on the sea for two nights. We don’t have much luck with air mattresses …

The Next Day-

The next morning we started our hiking. I asked the hubby if he wanted to go and he said no. He wanted to spend his father’s day relaxing. So I took the dog and the little one and headed into the forest. My dog has been sick and injured so I have to really watch the degree of difficulty and distance with her. So we headed 3/4 of a mile in and followed this long winding stream up.

We spent time playing in the water and me making a wet turban from my long sleeve shirt because the temperature was quickly climbing. Then my daughter dumped her sweatpants in the water to be like mommy. So After attaching all wet stuff to pack and putting the child in too, I began heading back to camp.

Once back at camp, was when I thought I heard a bear, but it was just Brian. He got a magical spring in his step and decided to go drive to the other park up a little way and hike Bash Bish Falls. I’m glad my car made it as the computer keeps acting up and thinks my car is overheating. The fan goes on and everything. Very annoying.

Bash Bish Falls-

It was so touristy. We were the first ones there to have to park in overflow. Even though it was a fairly simple hike, my legs were burning as this was the second uphill hike in one morning. We got to cross the border into Massachusetts which was pretty cool and let Noodles splash in the water.

We made it the falls, and they were beautiful. Brian is more the worrier parent and didn’t want to do the steep stair climb down to the falls. So we headed back after he used the lovely Porta-Potty and we took pictures like all the other tourists and started hiking back. We let Abby stop and play with Noodles in safer water. It was so cold. She didn’t have a spare top, so I mavericked one of my bandannas. I put on social media that bandannas are for boo-boos and boobies. Then after a stop for pizza, we headed back to camp to eat it.

Back at the Site-

We hung out and relaxed. Brian took Abby to the beach and playground and let me nap. Napping wasn’t working too well as my dog kept barking at everything … But, it was awesome to just relax ALONE. It is one of those mom luxuries. I played with the fire and ate snacks without little fingers all in my food.

That evening, Abby decided she wanted to go on a hike and even got the pack. So we went on a short hike in the opposite direction we had gone on that morning. We walked around part of the lake and headed back. Another 1.5 miles. The woods start getting creepy as the sun is setting and less and less light is filtering through the trees.

At some point, people showed up next door on that Saturday. Like a whole big family that looked like they just arrived from the city. We would find out my guess was right, they were from Midtown Manhattan. But, they ended up being nice and we pretty much did our own thing. But, that night, their son came over and offered Abby S’mores, so we went over and ate S’mores. Well, not Brian, he doesn’t eat S’mores. I guess he’s watching his figure. Bhahahahaha.

Last Day of Camping Trip-

“I’m ready to go”

The next morning, we started packing up after our very unhealthy donuts breakfast.  Then Abby went to the trunk and started tugging at my pack. You guessed it, another walk in the woods. So we did another 1.5-mile walk and found a small waterfall. I started following Noodles up this new trail … But it was so steep, I had to slide down on my hip with Abby on my back. We went back to camp, packed up and that was it.

Some other fun highlights

Abby decided by night two that she didn’t want her little potty in woods. She wanted to use the big potty. I hadn’t taken there, so I am not sure how she knew where it was.

Learning and talking to other people can be very interesting. There was a man there that had fake flamingos and they all had names. Even though two he has at home. He had an awesome light show display. Stories courtesy Brian who chatted with him.

My daughter somehow learned that when she went to the cooler to get herself a juice box, she would also say “mommy drink” and bring me back a bottle of Redds. I seriously hardly drink, so I found that amusing.

The clothing line of clothes

Pack more clothes then you think you will need if camping with a tiny human

-Always pack extra things for a child to do and have backup activities planned. We did Yoga and made a nature craft.

This post is dedicated to my lovely Husband and dad! This camping trip was for him and he enjoyed it a lot. Happy Father’s day. Already planning the next camping trip!

Conclusion

Thanks for reading our little journal entry. We also have some cool posts about topics on how to winter hike with children and an awesome child-carrier called the Freeloader allowing families to carry their child a lot longer beyond the toddler years. Our review is here. Thanks for stopping by!

Introduction-

They say there is a first time for everything. So we picked one of my husband’s favorite activities this time and went camping with our two daughters, Abby and the much hairier daughter, Noodle Bean. We only went a short distance away to Millerton, NY. An awesome little town with lots of cute shops. We stayed at Taconic State Park, Rudd Pond Area in NY right over the Connecticut Border. I actually cringed because I had to make the reservations two weeks in advance through Reserve America and didn’t want to lose the money (all 47 dollars approx.) if the weather was crappy. If you didn’t guess, I’m a tad cheap. I like to say, thrifty, money cautious. Sounds better than cheap.

Getting Everything Together-

Next thing I did before we even thought about leaving, was making a list. I’m kind of like a scatter brained squirrel. So I need a list to stay focused and I just keep adding to it and adding to it. Then, I cross things out.

I wanted to wake up and get packing the day we left. It probably would have been smarter to pack the night before. However, we couldn’t find our air mattress (we think we popped another one-don’t ask), our lantern was missing glass and we needed batteries or someone (ahem hubs) would have been blowing up the queen size mattress.

So, that morning, I ran into Dick’s sporting Goods quickly and grabbed everything less the batteries. I called my husband he told me the battery powered lanterns are crap and to return it. So I let out a low grumble at him and decided to return them after  church mom’s meetup-playgroup with my friend, Carol and her daughter-Abby’s bestie, Ju Ju. Yes, I have awesome time management skills (sarcastic) and figured, “hey why not go play for a few hours? I only have a list as long as a giraffe’s neck? What else could go wrong?”

Plenty more can go wrong #momlife

So when we got back, I returned the stupid lantern to the store, went to Target, found nothing and was just about ready to leave, when Abby started signing she was hungry. So, we had to stop for food court teriyaki chicken and green beans. Then off to the grocery.

I did the fastest grocery shopping for a trip you have ever seen. It was like mommy dash 2018. I get everything in car. All ready to get out and get home and now the sign for potty. It’s pushing 90 degrees, I have things that will perish and my kid needs to poop. Are you serious? So I rush her into store and into bathroom. Once, that ordeal was over and yes, she made it. Thank God. We headed home. Oh but wait, not just yet … We had to stop for gas and I had to text my husband I was done and he needed to get the ice. At this point, I was carrying a completely passed out child in my arms and trying to pump gas. Yep. Dead weight. Her face was plastered into my left boob. I don’t know why I need to specify. But, yeah.

back home …

So I get home, and go to put blankets in dryer and realize, I had wet crap in dryer and I needed blanket dry from washing machine. So I literally slung everything from dryer all over my house and got the blankets drying. I get everything packed that I can and I my husband gets home from work. He looks at me and says “would you rather go in morning?” Let’s just say, I had some words and went a taaaaad crazy. In a nutshell, this car was leaving within the half hour-No ifs, ands or buts … So off we went on our first Camping Adventure.

Stay tuned to P2-The actual Trip! Camping with a toddler. Dun dun dun

uncle-bucks-fish-bowl-and-grill-unique-atmosphere

Uncle Buck’s Fish Bowl and Grill is an amazing bowling experiencie with a very unique atmosphere! In fact, we traveled from the upper Hudson Valley, NY to get there. My brother lives only a few minutes away. It’s attached to Bass Pro Shops, so you can also go look at the cool scenery in there and get some shopping done afterwards. My daughter loves all the animals and thinks they are real.

Inside the Atmosphere changed to Under the Sea!

When we walked inside Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl and Grill, we were greeted with very friendly people. We went early on in the day during the week and it wasn’t crowded at all. So, I highly recommend this place to stay at home mom’s, dad’s or whoever else watches the kiddos during the day.  I know on hot or rainy days, people are always searching for fun stuff to do.

They gave us a nice corner lane, setup the bumpers for my daughter and we all got shoes! Even my daughter was accommodated with her tiny little 7t bowling shoe. They were kind of adorable.

Yummy Food!

While we were bowling, we even tried their gator bites. They were able to custom order them with no issues from the chef without the spicey because I would have felt really bad if my daughter got fire mouth. The grownups barely got any as my lovely child was hovering over them and ate most of them on her own.  The beer was ice cold and sprite was great.

The Truly Unique Atmosphere-

The scenery in this place is awesome down to the tiniest details. I love how the bowling balls pop-out of various water creatures and everything gives the appearance that you are underwater. My daughter was really taking it all in and asking questions about the different creatures. So it was educational too and that we love.

unique atmosphere

Finishing the Game … Or did we?

When we finished our game, we were provided with a printout because we wanted to always remember

our awful scores and how a 2.5 year old almost beat us. Granted, she had the bowling ball ramp and bumpers. You can see, I’m still trying to make myself feel better. Another great point, I was talking to the girl upfront as I chased my child around and she said that she saw we were still finishing our drinks, catching up and I was chasing my little one. She ended up giving us fifteen extra minutes on the lane. She will never know how much that meant to us. My daughter hardly ever gets to see her only uncle and we never get to just hangout with him and catch-up. So that extra little touch meant a lot. Of course, too, it also gave me time to run around and burn off the gator bites and beer.

Final Thoughts-

It was my daughter’s first time bowling and she truly enjoyed herself. In fact, we all enjoyed ourselves and would definitely go back. I highly recommend the place to anyone looking for a new adventure and fun twist on bowling. Best part is that there are Uncle Buck Fishbowls all over!

Still want more fishy themed awesomeness in Connecticut? Well, take a look at when we visited SeaQuest in Trumbull. It isn’t too far away from Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl and Grill and also a very unique atmosphere!

the-great-swamp-the-great-fall

We start out the hike meandering through the Great Swamp on a beautiful boardwalk as we looked at the birds being flushed out of the tall weeds.  Abby was having a great time running free down the boardwalk exploring every chance she could get. It was truly picturesque.

Into the Woods-

swamp
crossing through the great swamp

Eventually it ended and it turned into forest as the Appalachian trail started a steady climb uphill.  I really had to go to the bathroom so we stopped and took a potty break and then we hiked on.  I’d stop occasionally to ask her if she wanted to stop or keep going up the mountain and she would gleefully say, “that way” pushing me further and further up the mountain. There were times when I wanted to give up and  I would have this little person in front of me just telling me to keep going. She’s my little motivator.

We have spent many hours walking the Appalachian Trail-Read one article here!

Fun In the Woods-

after swamp and into the woods
Abby demonstrating how to wear a hiking pack

Every time we approached a log or rock we would have to go, “one, two, three” and jump over it. It was quite the funny game that she was playing.  We stopped and had snacks and had a potty break for Abby this time. Then we went a little bit further up the hill before turning around back towards the car.

Part way down the mountain and Abby saw mud and got an excited look in her eyes. Playtime in the mud, gunk and water was commencing. Her boots got stuck in the mud and she had to wiggle, wiggle, wiggle to get it out. Abby kept telling me it was stuck as if  I’m supposed to go get it. I wasn’t about to become a mud casualty too.  She continued to play in the mud and jump up and down and run back and forth throw it and just making a crazy mess of herself.

Eventually, she was finished and I pulled off any other clothing that had become a casualty. This would not be the first time she was barefoot and in underwear on the trail.

Say Cheese-

She took my phone and stopped to take some awesome photos of the scenery around her until she became tired and wanted up. I picked her up and carried her in front of me as we continued hiking down the mountain. We eventually crossed paths with a man who told us he was hiking 300 miles from Vermont to the border of Pennsylvania and New Jersey on the Appalachian Trail. Abby snapped a photo of him and caught him off-guard with her camera.  I explained her love for picture taking, so he stopped and smiled at the camera and thought it was great. We exchanged our trail names with each other and we said goodbye to our new buddy, Scooner.

The Great Fall-

Back down to the boardwalk we came across a nice older, mountain looking man. He began talking about his grandchildren and life in Vermont. I turned around and Abby was mid air as she did a swan dive into the boardwalk. It was a perfect face-plant. We made it almost back to the car. We were so close. I pick her up and examined her and noticed blood everywhere. There’s blood on my clothes, on her … there’s blood all over. She’s crying, and I’m panicking inside but I know I have to check her out calmly. The older man decides to leave after giving us a few suggestions of things we should try doing.

Three more people come up and one, just luckily happens to be ski patrol. We lay her down and check her out to make sure that she didn’t bite off her tongue or cause any serious damage or had knocked out any of her teeth. It turns out that she had ripped her upper lip from her gum so I cleaned it up as best I could with my trusty bandanna. One person tried soothing her and another one showed her their dog as I put her in her carrier. I put her on my back to take her to the car and thanked the kind hikers.

This is a good time to remember the five everyday backpacking essential items! One came in handy!

Safely Back at the Car-

We got back to the car and I gave her something to drink to wash out her mouth and we headed back to the house. Not five minutes down the road, my check engine light went on the second her half drunk milk flew across the backseat. I just said “really?” and pushed my car home.

I had to call the doctor because she was looking like a Simpsons character with her lip the way it was. They said she had to come in because she smacked her head even though I didn’t think it was really necessary because this fearless child has done stuff before.  We saw the nurse and she told us that Abby had giving herself a frenectomy (the detaching of that piece of skin from lip to gum) and that she also has some superficial scratches and bruises but was absolutely fine. She was shocked her teeth looked great and said from now on we could do home checks because she’s so tough. I brought her home and that was it for adventure in the Great Swamp via the Appalachian Trail. Oh and bonus, her lip skin grew in higher up and her speech has improved!

mom-life-stories-mama-bear

Sometimes, mom life turns us into true mama bears. In this story, there are two examples of how mama bear had to show herself. Life is never dull.

Mom Life Story #1-Bowdoin Park and the toy that was taken

Abby insisted on walking with a couple of her toys. Her mouse even dipped her toes in cool stream. She hiked for a bit and then of course wanted “up” and I had left the pack in the car. So I got her up on my shoulders and we howled loudly for the whole world to hear. I bet people there was a Sasquatch or crazy people in the woods. We were really loud! We were hiking near a monastery and I think we went by a Monk. He was very nice and said hi.

I let her pick all the directions and she took us to a dead end. So we turned around and headed back because she wanted to go to the playground. We walked by a group of school children and I asked if they wanted to have her for a bit as she seemed to blend right in. We laughed and kept walking. I asked her if she had to potty and she no and pottied her stuffed animal instead.

We made it playground and she was squealing with excitement. She kept taking her toys and putting them down the slide first and then following. Abby tossed a toy down the fireman pole and a boy around age six looked right at her and proceeded to steal her toy. She looked devastated. I being mama bear looked right and him and said “that’s not yours, give it back, please.” He ignored me and started messing with it and walking away. I once again reminded him and eventually went over and took it from him. No parent around. I returned it to my daughter who was not happy.

Time to Leave the Area …

She decided it was time to leave that section of playground. She had a friend from music there and he was ignoring her. So I think she just had enough. It made me upset that a children can be so rude so young. My child is not perfect, and has her moments. Trust me. But, blatant rudeness is so frustrating. I can understand the little boy from her class not wanting to play because he had another friend with him. But, what I can’t understand is the other child who saw her toss it and took off with it with a parent standing next to him. So that was an adventure in itself. All I can do as a parent is try and continue to teach my child how to be a kind human-being with manners. Sorry, temporary mom rant. I am back.

Read an awesome post about an experience of kindness here!

After playing alone for a bit, she said “done.” It isn’t uncommon for her to become quickly bored on a playground. So combined with everything else, I knew she was done. We left and went on our next awesome adventure … Grocery shopping! She gets her own cart and even will checkout at self checkout!

Mom Life #2- Hike on Burger Hill, Rhinebeck NY

So I got a bug up my butt and headed out with Abby to Burger Hill before preschool library time. My calves were burning!!!! Like seriously on fire. So out of shape. I seriously feel like a bear emerging from hibernation. Put on twenty plus pounds over the five months of inactivity. But I saw a little bird sitting on the hill in what seemed a mile into the clouds. The bird kept me going and I started turning the bird and the hill into a life metaphor after a couple rough days. I almost puked but I made it.

mom life
water

I got to top and let Abby down to romp. She reached in pack and gave me a straw for my water. I was so thirsty. I put my lips on the straw And it tasted like bug spray!!!! Ugh. But, I smiled, said thank you and hid the straw.

After a little while Abby was ready to go. Of course going downhill, she wanted to walk. Of course. She reminded me of the little girl from little house on the prairie. Frolicking about. She took my camera and was snapping photos until she fell and scraped up her knee.

So I carried her a 1/4 to car … Then we headed to library time.

Conclusion-

Here are two prime examples of a mama bear. One time where the claws and fierce roar came out to protect her little cub. The other time was more an emergence from winter hibernation. Onto mama bear and Abby Girl’s next adventure…

Thank you for reading! As always-Peace, Love and French Fries-Adventures of Abby Girl
