benefits-of-horseback-riding-and-horses

Abby Girl seems so confident and Poised. However, what people don’t realize is she is a very shy, sensitive child. Horses have brought this confidence and joy to her. It’s absolutely amazing how many benefits have come from being around horses and learning to ride.

For horseback riding, one benefit is core strength and balance. Others are dealing with anxiety, decision making, and confidence. The list goes on. Abby started around three years old and the results have been amazing.

benefits of horseback riding

A surprising fact is that Abby is very shy and doesn’t speak in certain situations. However, when she’s around a horse, it’s a whole different child. For Instance, horseback riding has given her joy and confidence. She’s currently at Horses for a Change in Esopus New York which offers a therapeutic riding program as well as being a primarily English barn. Abby is learning English. They have her do lots of confidence and coordination building exercises. Today she asked to make the jump higher. There went Lolipop the Pony and Abby flying at a canter and over they leaped. If you are ever looking for English or Therapeutic riding in the Esposus area, we highly recommend them. In fact, learn more at our other blog about Horses for a Change and Abby’s experience.

Next, a person is learning trust. Not only does a person have to trust themselves, but they have to trust the horse. The horse has to feel this too. She rides the horse backward, lays down on her, goes around the world, and even takes “naps” on Lolipop. When we go hiking, a lot of the same principles apply. That trust has to be there along with confidence, leadership, strength (both mentally and physically), problem-solving and much more. See what the trails taught us in the blog post called Six Weeks of Wandering in the Woods. Amazing the parallels.

More Benefits of Horseback Riding-

For western riding, Abby attends camp at Ridge Runner Ranch in New Paltz, New York. Here she is around other children. The horses give her the courage to socialize and interact. Although sometimes, Abby still likes to fly solo and build sandcastles in the arena. Learn more about her experience at Ridge Runner Ranch Camp. Abby Girl approves this place and really likes it here too!

What Brittany Mercier Owner of Ridge Runner Ranch has to add …

I think, in general, horseback riding and the barn is an amazing resource and can be used as an educational tool for children. It can also help children that need guidance in certain areas or aspects of their lives. Horses instill courage, self confidence and a self awareness.

I have seen my kids (that’s what I refer to them) develop such a sense of self pride in such short periods of time. Sometimes I have my older kids show the younger ones what they’ve learned. I feel this reinforces the concepts learned in a similar way that a test would. However, this way is more fun and less stressful. I see how proud of themselves they are at what they know and what they can accomplish all by themselves.

I push my kids. To show them that they’re absolutely capable of anything. When they take that leap and they see what they can do- they realize they are powerful. They can accomplish just about whatever comes their way. This spreads to all realms of their lives and their interactions with others.

Ridge Runner Runner Ranch

Just being with a horse has huge benefits-

You are learning compassion by caring for something else, not yourself. Furthermore, for Abby, they depend on each other and there’s a level of responsibility when she is around a horse.

A person has to be alert and in tune. A horse is like a human. They have good days and bad days. Both can get sick or injured. Around a horse, a person must be aware of everything. You walk behind a horse, you can get kicked. You feed the treat the wrong way with fingers bent, the horse can accidentally get your fingers.

Sum-up-

benefits of horseback riding
  • confidence
  • trust
  • mental and physical strength
  • leadership and decision making skills
  • social skills
  • relaxation and help with anxiety-related disorders
  • competitive spirit
  • awareness
  • compassion
  • responsibility

What Another Parent Has to Say-

A parent recently completed a write-up. Her child attends Ridge Runner Ranch. She too has been able to see such a change. Readers read on to see the amazing transformation.

Before beginning the equine classes with Brittany my 12-year-old daughter struggled with self- confidence and was challenged a bit academically having been diagnosed with a non-verbal learning disability. This learning disability showed up as dyslexia, struggling to comprehend, and challenged in articulating herself.

I saw on social media that there was an equine day camp and I thought my daughter would be interested. When I told her I signed her up she demanded I take her out of it, she did not want to go. I reached out to Brittany letting her know my daughter was a little shy and wanted to bail on the camp. Brittany brought comfort to my concern by reassuring me that my daughter was not alone in feeling this way, but to still give it a try.

My daughter attended the camp and when I went to pick her up she asked if she could go back the next day. This was the beginning of something I never imagined. I kept her going in the weekly classes with Brittany. She was learning so much about equine life and then I realized that she was learning so much about real life. Then She started to gain confidence as I began to see it in her interactions with peers. She began to have an open mind about learning, even in her academics. I noticed that her processing disorder was not as bad as it used to be. She had a deeper excitement and zest for life.

… Riding a horse makes you aware of your feelings so it is breeding an internal awareness that is key for kids to have success in life. I see my daughter… Learning to brush a horse, wrap its legs, put on a saddle, ride a horse, muck a stall, and place a bit in a horse’s mouth Yet, what is really going on is…. Learning responsibility, how to be gentle, how to listen to her instincts, good work ethic is built, increased confidence, her inner spirit smile, how to be caring, strength, and serenity.

Wild Mountain Bird is a wildlife rescue and rehabilitator located in Rosendale New York. However, it’s so much more than a rescue because Annie Mardiney also holds educational programs to educate the public about the wild bird species in the area (mainly raptors). She’s also insured.

Recently, we attended her birds of prey show at Pine Ridge Dude Ranch. She fills you in on so much information on the different types of birds in her wildlife rehabilitation.

Honestly, the fact that she kept the just turned four year old’s attention for the whole show is amazing. Seriously, Abby was completely immersed in the presentation taking so many photos.

Some Other Thoughts-

Look up Wild Mountain Bird Rescue on Facebook or at the next event at the
Live Raptors at the 25th Annual Commitment to Kids Toy Drive on December 1 in Bloomington New York.

I highly recommend her rescue if you see an injured bird in the Hudson Valley and nearby areas. She’s a very knowledgeable wildlife rehabilitator specializing in birds of prey (IE Owls, Hawks, Eagles, Falcons)

How do these birds become injured?

wildlife rehabilitator shows the crowd a falcon
Peregrine Falcon
  1. Being hit by a vehicle or train

2. Poisoning. Led found from the fish in the rivers that often comes from fisherman leaving behind their sinkers. In addition, at the show, she said that rat poison can harm or even kill these birds. Often these poisons are ingested by the mice first. Next, the mouse goes outside to die and the bird eats the mouse harming or killing both.

3. Another way birds become injured or sick is Habitat loss. In fact, it’s the leading cause of injury or death in these birds. Many animals are being pushed out of their habitats because of human’s building more and more. As a result, more injuries.

*A lot of information taken from Hawkwatch International and learned from the show we attended

Wildlife Rehabilitator

What Can We Do?

  1. If you see an injured bird or any wildlife, do not touch them. Contact your local wildlife rehabilitator.
  2. Use an alternate method than poison. Things like super scented fabric softener sheets are a great alternative to poisons
  3. Clean up your trash. It’s not just sinkers in the water. Wildlife can get tangled in fishing line, plastic bags, and bottles. Also, if you see trash even if it isn’t yours, pick it up.

The Story Behind the Birds Pictured-

Meet Meng
  1. Eastern screech owls  Rufus (L) and Chet (R).  Both hit cars years ago.  Rufus only has a right eye.  Both Chet’s eyes are compromised and therefore, cannot see clearly enough to hunt successfully.
  2. Keith is the American kestrel.  A young male purchased from another raptor rehab center (that also raises raptors for other falconers) Meng is the Peregrine falcon.  2.5-year-old male.  Born under the Poughkeepsie bridge.  When he was learning to fly, he went up to where traffic is and hit a truck head-on.  Therefore, He cannot be released because his right eye is blind. I also want to personally add that Meng is very much a character and loves getting the audience’s attention.
  3. Tyto is the Barn Owl
  4. Featured image is a male great horned owl, named Tiger.  He is not releasable because his right-wing can’t fully extend, so he’s not fully flighted anymore.

theres-a-goat-in-the-car-mommy

A few minutes from our house, there is a farm where the owner’s play cricket in the warmer weather. It is also home to many goats. That includes one special escape goat that got in my car.

It was any ordinary day as I was returning from running errands with my daughter. Then for the third time

goat buddy watching the escape goat
goat buddy watching on from behind the fence

I saw a goat practically in the road and not the first time I have seen this very familiar goat. The first time, the goat was standing in front of police car being held by the cop looking as if rights were being read. The second time I stopped, a lady was there and I helped corner the goat with my vehicle. She said the goat often escaped and she lived nearby so she always had a leash on her. I’m so glad the goat didn’t jump on my new car. That would have been really difficult to explain to my husband.

This brings us to the third time, the goat almost in the road and no one but me and Abby to rescue him. So I swung around and got on the side of the road near where the goat was grazing. The goat’s buddy staring at him from other side of the fence as if to say “here we go again.” I got my dog’s leash and caught the goat.  A few minutes later, my daughter opened her eyes and started squealing. So, I let her out of her seat and called the police as I try not to laugh as I call in the escape goat. They said this has been become a regular occurrence and they would send police. Yes, police and backup for a goat.

I asked my three year if she wanted to wait with us and she replied “no, have shoes on.” So she was stuck in the car as I can’t put on shoes and wrangle goats. I’m just not that talented.

Goat in car mommy and it's eating crumbs
Goat in car mommy!

That’s when it happened. The goat began eating the crumbs from my car floor. It then got on my lap. So my daughter starts yelling “there’s a goat in the car mommy!” We were both cracking up. I shot a quick picture as it looked like the goat was driving my car. Then we got back out and just about that time, the police came. I gave them the goat to return and snapped some pictures with goat in police custody before putting my child back in her seat and driving off. I could see the cops walking the goat home as I went and my daughter cried out for her new friend, the Van Wagner Goat.

the-adventures-in-pet-ownership

The adventures in Pet ownership. They are never dull. We have had several animals find their way into our home over the years. Thanks to our neighbor and my husband’s good friend, the group has grown.

So since I have met my lovely husband, we have gotten cats I rescued from our backyard when we moved into our home. My husband told me no and to leave them alone, but I just couldn’t. Soon three out of four would be in our home and indoor kitties.

The mama kitty who looks like a Tim Burton character. She just appears now and again and is a senior kitty now that suffers from TBIS. Little Mini Strokes.

Wormy, son, who was consistent with issues and slinks around. He was the one they forgot about when all the cats were fixed returning home and I asked my husband why the cat still had little balls. Another time, Wormy disappeared as a baby.  Upon his return, he had  a huge, nasty neck injury his mama licked and fixed. They are very close. There was Spook. My husband told me he ran away to join the circus. He made an appearance recently in our yard. The last cat is my favorite and Abby’s.

Bubba Kitty. He is very large and more dog-like than cat-like. Sadly, Bubba fell on his head as a baby because he lacks cat-like reflexes. He also got stuck in his carrier at the Vet and it took three of us to pull him out because he likes carriers that are too small for him.

In our house cat’s and birds play together

We had a bird, Oliver. Oliver was very Bipolar and Schizophrenic. When one of our beloved clients passed away suddenly, the bird was left alone in the house in the middle of winter. Naturally, I needed to rescue the bird. The bird liked to drop its toys to the ground and when the bird thought the toy was dead, it would let out a creepy laugh. At first it bonded to my husband.

However, he soon became bonded to me instead. We even would cuddle. I had a surprise unplanned pregnancy. The bird used to peck and stare into my belly. After the baby was born, the bird would hide in the ceiling of our house and dive-bomb us. It got to the point where it would dive bomb, latch on and not let go, repeatedly biting. It was like Birds. So heartbroken, I gave Oliver to Northeast Avian Rescue and the bird was adopted.

We have Noodles. Noodles, we got as a puppy from Animal Rescue Foundation in Beacon aka ARF. She is now going to be nine this year. We got her while my mom was being treated for a brain injury. Noodles used to go and cheer up the residence there and could even pull a wheelchair. She became the mascot for our business, A Touch of Old Fashioned and would cheer up many seniors we worked for when we had to go do miscellaneous jobs for them.

benefits to pet ownership

Noodles, also has summit mountains, worked at flea markets and made friends with Meaty Mugs an awesome all natural dog treat company. She also starred in a film my husband and I co-wrote and produced for Youtube called Happy Dog the Film.

Hermit Crab
Hello Fre the Hermit Crab

AND now, we have two hermit crabs. My husband walked into the house the other night and was like “Carly got them for Abby in Virginia.” Carly is my husband’s, friend’s daughter. They started in a small wire mesh tourist cage with rocks. We went the next day and got them pretty pink sand, shells, a wading dish, small tank.

We set it up, took pictures and even posted our new learning corner to Instagram. I received a message on Instagram with advice and discovered everything was wrong. So, I then started doing research and joined a Hermit Crab Group on Facebook. So we went back out and bought new stuff and went and collected driftwood etc. I set up the new tank again and Fre. Yes, Fre burrowed under the new natural play sand Eco earth mixture (5:1) and has not been seen since. I have to wait three months as he could be stressed. Yes, crabs feel stress. He could be molting or he could be dead. It is a waiting game.

Wrong setup for Hermit Crabs. The Adventures in Pet Ownership
wrong setup for Hermit Crabs

I have put plastic wrap over top to keep moisture in and they have a saltwater pool. They also have a freshwater smaller pool and food dish. The food packets for Hermit Crabs aren’t good for them. At night, they nibble on a lot of foods we eat.  Just nothing processed, dyed or with additives, spices. We have also tossed the sponge as it can harbor bacteria. They also need their tank at a certain temperature and correct humidity. It is a lot.

Lastly, no handling the crabs because the air can damage their gills. I also found out the hard way that when they pinch, it can hurt bad. I’m sitting there trying not to cry as Abby laughs hysterically. It finally let go.

New Setup for hermit Crabs. The Adventures in Pet Ownership
New Setup for Hermit Crabs

The one crab is still running around and enjoys its small pieces of driftwood to climb on and the wide variety of shells gives many stylish options for the crabs. No more painted shells as they are also no good. Bake the wood at 225 for a few hours to kill mites. Just an FYI. Sooner than later, the cage will need to be upgraded to a bigger size.

-Side note, Abby drew a picture of the family to put next to their home so they would know who we were and pictures of them on the wall.

So Welcome to Fre and the other one that I can never remember the name as it is very long. Welcome to our Menagerie of animals and beings in our household. What’s next? Fish! Our pet ownership adventure continues.

What pet should we have next? How about a turtle? We rescued one once!

turtle-in-road

It is that time of season again. The trees are blooming, the birds are chirping and the happy little animals are frolicking in the road without a care as big metal beasts zooming down the road. In this case, there was a turtle in the road and yes, we do try to brake for turtles. So what do you do?

Now here is my disclaimer-We were on a back road and could safely pull over to rescue the turtle.

-When braking, pulling out of the way or pulling over, practice safety and common sense. We don’t want you to become a roadkill casualty alongside whatever you were trying to rescue.

-Remember, certain types of turtles can really hurt you.  Snapping turtles can eat your fingers like a Vienna Sausage. Picking them up by their tails can dislocate their vertebra. This will permanently injure them.

-When you get home, you should really wash your hands too or use hand sanitizer in your car.

Our Story-

turtle rescued
mom with turtle

We were coming home from running errands when my husband yells, “turtle” and proceeds to pull over. He gets out of car and grabs this cute little painted turtle from the middle of the road. He brings it into the car and we show Abigale as he begins driving toward the pond. We tell her all about our little hitchhiker. Then I start asking silly questions such as,

“What about his family? Won’t Mrs. Turtle wonder where he is?”

My husband just looks at me silly and replies,

“The turtle is getting upgraded to a nicer pond … It’s moving day.”

I know it is wrong of me, but my immature five year old, inner self was kind of hoping the turtle would pee on my husband. I know.

We continued driving down the road as my husband yells,

“Fastest turtle in the world going forty miles an hour.”

My daughter in back seat, must think her parents are completely insane.

We pull-up to the pond and he passes the turtle to me to bring down to water’s edge. As I’m walking down, I hear two guys shouting and pointing from other side. They had rescued a turtle too. We shout back and forth to each other in victory and I grab my cell to take another quick picture before leaving Mr. Turtle at his new home.

It was a great small adventure for Abigale and taught her a little something too and maybe I gained back some karma points after flattening the chipmunk the other day. Just remind yourself, as much as you want to, you can’t save them all.

Final Thoughts-

Here are some awesome turtle facts. One point we did wrong, is you never move a turtle from their location to another pond.  All the key points on how to properly move a turtle can be found here. When in doubt, call your local wildlife rehabilitation place.

Happy Spring everyone!
