Browsing Category: How to have Great Educational Experiences

How do we have great Educational Experiences? Well, we are a homeschooling family. Home-school is what we do and with that we have a lot of educational experiences.

In this category, we talk about outdoor education where you can learn about ways children can get an awesome education by using nature as their backdrop.

You can get geeky with us at the library as we discuss all the ways to have a great time at your local library.

Of course, there will be homeschooling posts to keep you on track and give you valuable ideas on how to home-school and have an awesome time.

Abby girl even spent six months in preschool and there is even a post on that. However, six months after starting, she was pulled. On the bright side, it gave us more time to write all about our adventures and have one heck of an educational experience.

five-must-do-homeschool-morning-tasks

There are must-do homeschool morning tasks that Abby girl tries to complete before starting the adventure of the day.

Morning snuggles

Morning snuggles is the first half hour of day when we first wake-up. It’s a time to be present and unplugged where we just snuggle and watch a television show of her choice. It’s a great time to just relax before the madness of the day begins.

Morning Calendar-

We have a pocket calendar on the wall. Each day we discuss the date and then count up all the numbers. So if it’s the fifth, we count 1,2,3,4,5. We also include the month, year, season, days of week (today, yesterday, tomorrow) and the weather.

TIP- Try fun songs about different parts of the calendar to help with memorization and engagement. Sadly, my child does not like children’s songs and Ozzy hasn’t released a days of the week song yet …

Animal of the day-

We have two bins that have books on animals. I ask my child to randomly pick a book and animal without looking. We read about that animal and then she has to write the name of it in her notebook and create a picture. Usually, I have her include the habitat in the picture too.

Suggestion- Abby Girl loves animals. So that is what is in our bin. However, you can gather books on whatever your child’s interest currently and do the same thing. You can also switch up the books throughout the school year.

Daily Prayer and Pledge-

There is an American Flag hanging in our classroom. So each day, the hand goes over the heart and she recites the pledge with me. I want to maintain some of the more old fasshioned schooling principles and teach her a respect for her country.

Daily prayer is also important. We have our on prayer that we would like to share with everyone. Click on it for a link to the free printable!

Discuss Our Adventures for the day-

We check our secondary calendar to figure out if and what is happening that day. This could be meetup, extra curricular activity, special event. Beyond that if we are hiking that day, we plan out where we are going and what we will need on that hike. This is key for teaching accountability.

We also decide where or not to bring the dog. If you do bring your pooch, be mindful of their ability too. Our dog is twelve and a mile is becoming difficult for her.

Final Thoughts on Morning Homeschool Tasks!-

Obviously, the other things fit in here too like brushing hair, teeth, planning out wardrobe for the day and breakfast (sometimes, as we often eat on the fly at the local deli.) Brushing hair is usually a battle and doesn’t always happen.

However, the five tasks above are a constant. It gives children a level of predictability and routine which is important for them as they grow. It gives us a great foundation before Abby Girl hits whatever adventures the day might bring whether planned or impromptu. Do you have a must have morning homeschool task? Tell us in the comments.

volcano-experiment-for-kids

A Volcano experiment for kids is a great way to create a natural disaster without actually being there. There are so many options too!

The poster board-

A poster board is helpful to get Your child’s mind thinking and to teach about volcanoes. It shows them how to prepare for the experiments.

Chart-

This is the sciencey stuff that will be key in the experiment. Below is what we put on our chart. It also lists the ingredients. The one section is left blank to be done during each round of experimentation.

Picture-

Let your child draw what they think their volcano will look like. It helps them visualize their creation.

Parts of the Volcano-

Last part of poster board shows the parts of the volcano.

Additional-

Depending on the ability of the child, other stuff can be added such as key eruptions in history.

volcano chart

Make Your Volcano!

Then we made Paper Mache to create the volcano.

We used a two-liter soda bottle which takes a lot more materials. You can go smaller. We wanted a bigger opening at the top so I cut the mouth of the bottle bigger.

You wait for a layer to dry and add on more and more layers for a more detailed look. Just remember to let each layer dry in between. We rolled bits of paper and clumped up our strips to make it rockier looking. We also put the volcano on a piece of cardboard that you can secure with hot glue or strong bonding glue. Then we’re able to pull the strips out and down to make more of a volcano shape.

After your child is satisfied with their volcano shape, use non-toxic paint to cover the volcano.

Final step if you want it more permanent, is to seal it.

*kids can take it one step further and put fake trees houses, animals, people and make more of a scene for the volcanic eruption

volcano experiment

Time for the volcano experiments to begin-

It’s a lot of trial and error. We are not the type to sit there and have exact measurements we pulled off of every mommy homeschool blog on Pinterest. We enjoy the adventures in trial and error and flying by the seat of our pants.

Fail

The worst results for us and a complete failure was the diet soda and mentos. However, it worked well from the actual soda bottle. Let us know if you get it to work in the volcano.

So-So Experiment Results-

All experiments with baking soda and vinegar gave the same results. It bubbled and rolled fast over the top. But, we had to fill it all the way to the top. We used halfway up with water and rest, vinegar. A couple of drops of dish soap. We tried a baking soda bomb. However, just pouring it in gives a faster result.

The best experiment result-

Elephant tooth paste.

My kid put in a whole jar of yeast to two bottles of peroxide. But before the yeast was added, we added a few drops of dish soap and red non-toxic paint. Mix. Then put in yeast. My husband mixed it fast for a reaction. Our method made a really thick long-lasting, oozing reaction. I think she might have snuck in some baking soda too.

*appears our mistake is that you need to put a few drops of warm water into the yeast before pouring it into the volcano. This must be why a lot of the yeast immediately came back out of the top. Think melted ice cream.

Also, 3 percent peroxide will give a smaller reaction. If you go to the hair store, you can find a higher percentage for a bigger reaction. Just remember gloves and

After all, our experiments from the chart were completed and her findings recorded, we let her explore with whatever was leftover.

Final thoughts

A volcano experiment for kids is an awesome adventure. It’s fun for all ages as the activity can be changed based on ability, interest, age, etc. So go visit a volcano without having to deal with standing in real lava. PS. the experiment works best outdoors.

cool-uses-for-mud

There are so many uses for mud. In fact, there is even international Mud Day every June (June 29th 2020)! Sadly, due to the pandemic, most awesome mud events have been canceled. However, people can still learn some awesome uses for mud. Here are our top five!

1. Mud Art

A person cannot go more primitive than creating art with mud. Mud is one of the oldest forms of art.  Children also can have a blast creating mud masterpieces.

  • Make a painting. Yes, that is correct, make a painting out of mud. You can use a canvas or a giant white sheet. Depends how permanent you want the piece of art. If a canvas is used, I would suggest using a protective coating over the creation after it dries. Feel free to explore with different items found in nature for different results on the canvas.

Go watch our attempt at Mud Art!

  • Build with mud.
Mud art
Mud Man. Art is subjective
  • Pottery. It takes a lot to create clay from mud. However, anyone can do it and you don’t need to fire it in a kiln afterward. Let us know either through social media or in the comments if your family tries to make clay. This is an adventure we have not attempted yet. Here is a link to a recipe for clay. Go give it a try!

2. Use as Spa treatments

According to Hometown Station, mud has nutrients and minerals that the body can absorb through the skin. Mud can reduce the signs of aging, clear-up those pores, tighten skin and so much more. Just remember to add a moisturizer afterward as the mud can be drying. Mud masks are available in stores or you can go to a spa or vacation destination that specializes in mud treatments. I went into the woods with my daughter and tried my hand at beautifying with mud. Watch the video!

3. Reduces stress

Face it, there is something so calming about squishing the toes between some really nice mud or kneading it through the fingers. Some people hate it. Us, mud is the best. Ever danced in the mud? It is freeing. We should own stock in laundry detergent.

4. Mud is Fun

There are endless activities that you can do with your children and mud. Splash in a mud puddle. Make roads and drive trucks and cars through the mud. We work on our spelling by drawing letters and words in the mud. There is endless and educational fun with mud or just get in an old fashioned mud fight!

5. Primitive First-aid

  • According to Farm & Dairy, mud is the last resort but can alleviate the immediate effects of being stung. I have tried this on a couple of occasions. Obviously, if you are allergic, seek medical attention immediately. But, as you are calling for help, slap some mud on there if it is readily available. Face it, stings hurt like a B. No pun intended.

“You can smear mud overexposed skin for added sun protection and sunburn prevention. Mud acts as a physical barrier sunscreen because it prevents the sun’s UV rays from contacting or penetrating your skin”

In fact, even when mud cracks and falls off, there is still a protective layer there that will protect from some of the sun’s UV Rays.

Already sunburned? Mud can be very soothing.

  • Keeps away those nasty bugs. There is nothing worse than a million mosquito bites in the woods. According to Bensource, mosquitoes cannot bite through mud.

Again, if you have already been attacked, rub mud on the bite to soothe the reaction.

Fun Fact: Animals enjoy mud too. Many use it to keep cool and keep bugs off!

Final Rambling Thoughts-

We love mud at Adventures of Abby Girl! So many uses. Rednecks even use it for something called “Mud Bogging.” They literally drive ATVs, trucks, or whatever they imagine through the mud. My husband introduced me to it when we first met. Mud bogging is actually a lot of fun. It’s how he tested me to see if I was able to take it or not. We were bogging and he grabbed an ankle and dropped me head first into the mud. Let’s just say, I sprung up from the mud with a huge mud pie and nailed him in the head. We are now married for almost twelve years and together almost fourteen. Love at first mud pie.

how-to-prepare-for-back-to-school-home-school-edition

How do you prepare for back to school when you home school? A lot of home schooled children are year around learner’s like us. However, there are some great tips to “go back to”. It’s like a reevaluate/reset.

This post contains Amazon affiliate links and I receive a small portion if you purchase through my links.

Reorganize or Start a Busy Bag-

This is for learning on the go since a lot of homeschooling is done on the go. We spend ninety percent of our day out of our classroom at home. Mine is geared toward pre-k/k. However, it can be modified to fit pretty much any age. Even grown-ups can benefit from a busy bag.

The List-

Pocket dry Erase Sheets

-Worksheets inside pockets (we prefer create your own. I was told a teacher to use a highlighter to write out numbers, shapes and ABCs instead of following the dots. It’s easier for them to learn.)

Highlighter-

-Erasable Markers-

Notebook-

-Pencil depending on age, learning to write, the golf pencils are awesome

-A cheap camera (the only thing I would recommend not on Amazon is the SD cards-Go to B H Photo for those-a lot better quality)

-Snacks and water

-The tablet if they have one

-Travel games

Headphones because do you want to listen to their apps in the car? Picture Baby shark on repeat or Let it Go. You can’t just let it go.

-clipboard

-some books. We love seek and find books. However, the skies the limit here.

Prepare Your Classroom

home school
Part of Our Little Classroom

Get in order things you will need for the school year. Curriculum. Lesson plans if you use them. Charts. Calendar. Posters. Etc.

We use a free program called Easy Peasy which is Christian Based and supplement with other material. There are a lot more options as they get older with this program.

-You can still dress your child up and give them a chalk board. Create that yearly milestone. We opted for a banner on the wall courtesy Peppa Pig.

Here are Some items that either some mom’s must have or just sound cool. I’m not a laminator type of person spending hours at night by the light of moon highlighting sheet after sheet … However, some mom’s are.

A Laminator-

Printer- Highly recommend finding a printer with the insta-ink. If you are like me, you will simply run out of ink and then be out of luck until you get more or have to cart everyone to the local copy store or library. Insta-ink printers save you the headache by putting you on an ink subscription where it detects when you need ink. Depending on level you pick, you get so many prints a month and receive ink before you run out of it.

Touch Screen Computer- Do your research on Amazon. There are so many. However, here is one example. I have personally used Dell and HP. However, this caught my eye.

Get ready for Extracurricular Activities-

Transitioning from summer activities to fall activities. Home school co-ops in area, meetup groups and activities, sports, art, music, dance, cooking classes, STEM, library programs etc. Remember, Facebook is often a good source for finding groups locally or beyond. We are starting an old-school pen pal program this week!

The skies the limit with homeschool!

Nature Bag-

Get a bag or reorganize a bag with nature tools in it. Binoculars, notebook, sketch pad (this kind is great for the fellow left handed crew), crayons (my pick here is great for the younger set), pencil, camera, net, identification guide … If you want, a water proof camera is also and option!

Conclusion-

There is a lot of prep even for year around learner’s!  Every family will be different. However, this should give some ideas. What are some of your must haves in your home school classroom? Welcome back to school! Well, home school that is.

Please remember to subscribe if you liked what you read and you can also follow us on many different social media platforms.  Also, a lot more awesome content on YouTube. We would love Subscribers over there too!

Home School Adventures Begin. It has been about a month. I’m not going to sugar coat it … I am absolutely exhausted. We begin every morning with workbook. We in between all this have breakfast. She is going through a vegetarian phase that started the same time as homeschooling, so I’m adjusting to cooking a vegetarian menu for her unless it’s chicken nuggets. Then in the morning, we also do calendar and circle time. Sometimes we do a dance party or something impromptu. Then we are off and running.

Rrrrroar

Monday

we have Preschool library time and play at one of our many local libraries. That fills most of our morning. We eat lunch and run errands, go for a walk or hike or find something to do in the afternoon. We then read more stories, eat dinner and do whatever we need to do at home before bed. Bed is somewhere between 9-10 pm because she has issues settling down. In the afternoon, we had an art class for elementary age children. We made birch trees with little birdies.

Tuesday

we have free choice but always do all the other in place stuff such as workbook. But, our free choice this Tuesday was Muscoot Farm in Katonah, NY. We learned about turn of the century farm life and looked at animals. Then Abby girl wanted chicken nuggets and fries. GPS took us on a crazy adventure to find the golden happy meal. After that, we headed to the Jefferson Valley Mall where she saw a little boy in play area and played with him for a bit. It was getting late and I didn’t want her to miss her library program, so we headed back up north after a quick stop at the gas station for snacks. At 4 pm we had a lesson on Chinese New Year. She made an instrument, tried and liked an egg roll and did the prop photo-booth. Then back home.

Dance combo class in the morning. We stop for bagels. She pays. Then she has a combo dance class with her bestfriend, JuJu. Then grocery shopping for all our fantabulous vegetarian needs and educational stuff. K workbook for when prek gets boring. Aldis is my go to grocery store recently.

Thursday

Another library time. Then free choice.

Friday

Total free choice or Christian playgroup depending on the alternating week

Saturday

Kindermusik music. Then an adventure.

Sunday

Sunday School. Family time.

Hello foot Yoga Pose
Hello foot Yoga Pose-Homeschool Adventure

In between all this, we take full advantage of activities near and far we can go to and even possibly blog about. Sometimes, we even take mini vacations. We do it all on a very limited budget. So, there are no excuses. You just have be creative!

Next Weds she has another yoga class and more library bonus classes! Though only three, she has moved into many k-3 and k-6 programs. I gotta be doing something right! It’s a lot but we are getting the hang of things and just think of all the adventures we get to blog about now! I just have to work in between everything. Here is too our next adventure.

Please remember to subscribe if you liked what you read and you can also follow us on many different social media platforms.  We are also on YouTube. Lastly, you can read even more awesome adventures and travel suggestions at https://hvparent.com/adventures-of-abby-girl
