Browsing Category: Go Visit: Family Friendly New York

New York is our current home state and our main playground and there is plenty of family friendly stuff to do in New York. We live in an area called the Hudson Valley and in fact, my sister blog at Hudson Valley Parent lists a new place almost every week of things to do in just the Hudson Valley area.

However, the Hudson Valley is just a small piece of the puzzle that makes up New York.

In this category, readers can find both day trips and longer trips to do with their families in New York whether it is an outdoor adventure such as wandering the Appalachian trail, going to an orchard or catching a show.

We will also highlight towns we visit. There are so many small towns in New York with a lot to explore with your family. When people think of New York, they often think New York City and while yes, we will write about the city, there are also small towns to that are great options either for an extended weekend or a day trip.

One place you will find a lot of information on in this category is the all-inclusive resort, Pine Ridge Dude Ranch. It’s a great trip anytime of year whether it’s for a day, weekend or week.

Also in New York, you will find we write about a lot of trails. We spend a lot of time in the woods. In fact, Abby girl and I have traveled over three hundred miles in the last four years. We even have a separate page dedicated to reviewing different trails we’ve been on.

So come read about New York and all the family friendly options it has to offer for some amazing adventures.

“When there’s an epidemic of loneliness in the tri-state area,  the Pine Ridge Dude Ranch might just contribute to its cure.”

Quote by: Zee’s Mom

We are more connected than ever; just look at our use of social media websites and our preoccupation with reading about other people’s lives through platforms like online blogs.  Yet many of us struggle with feeling lonely, and the average person has only a few close friends. In our everyday lives, we may be surrounded by other people, but we may be busy and rushed. Inwardly,  we may have difficulty relaxing and getting to truly know those around us. If only there was a place that allowed us to relax enough to reach out to other people – through shared activities – and hopefully form friendships!   For those naysayers who believe that such a place doesn’t exist, we have news for you!

Let us introduce you to the Pine Ridge Dude Ranch.  It’s an all-inclusive resort in the Catskills. Through taking care of some of the nitty-gritty of life like providing all-inclusive meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), the Pine Ridge Dude Ranch strives to help make life feel a little less busy.  Its many, shared group activities can bring both family and strangers together. A case in point, the Pine Ridge Dude Ranch provided the perfect environment for our daughters to meet, the grownups to get to know each other, and all of us to become good friends.

The Backstory- It All Started with the Goats and the Petting Zoo

Hi.

There’s a joke about how it’s hard to carry on a conversation with goats because they’re always “butting in”.  Yet, all joking aside, six months ago, our families met at the ranch’s petting zoo. While the goats didn’t prove to be great conversationalists, our two young daughters certainly found something about which to talk.   It was an instant connection. Hand in hand, they left the petting zoo and started doing everything together during that trip. When the vacation was over, it was hard to separate them. We promised the girls that they would see each other again in six months.  We all signed up for the Home-school Weekend at Pine Ridge Dude Ranch!

Princesses of the Goats

In the meantime, the girls became pen pals as they live two hours apart.  Abby sent handwritten notes and special cards for the holidays. Her friend then surprised Abby on her birthday by coming up for pizza and a visit to a goat barn. The connection they formed at the ranch was still strong. In fact, they were the only two that followed the princess-themed goat party right down to their outfits!

Six Months Later – Back at Pine Ridge Dude Ranch

The big weekend came at Pine Ridge Dude Ranch. Zee and her family arrived Saturday afternoon. It was no longer Adventures of Abby Girl. It truly became adventures of Abby and Zee.

At dinner, our families condensed to one table and the best part was that we found out that the grown-ups had things in common too.  We quickly became great friends over a wonderful home-style buffet meal.

llama friendship
llamas at a Bonfire

After dinner, the girls went and changed into their matching llama pajamas that Zee’s mom brought up for the girls. We went to the bonfire and had a great time chasing the llamas and making s’ mores.

That night there was a hilarious comedian juggler who was very entertaining. That was followed by a dance party and more chasing of the llamas to get them into bed. However, with so much to do at the ranch, the girls had other late-night plans. Abby got a non-alcoholic Shirley Temple from the Silver Dollar Saloon, and Zee had to have cotton candy ice cream from the Chuck Wagon. Shortly after, Abby decided she needed chocolate ice cream. There the girls sat, enjoyed loads of sugar right before bedtime, and made wonderful memories.  (Don’t ask about the subsequent quest to find new stain remover techniques!)

The Next Morning …

We joined our new friends for breakfast. Then we changed for horseback riding. We were early so the girls spent time exploring the goat and chicken pen. They loved finding real eggs in one of the petting zoo’s shelters. Abby wanted to catch a chicken. However, she was unsuccessful. They spent time chatting with each other and the goats.

I got you, buddy

At the coral, when it was their time to ride ponies, Abby made sure Zee’s helmet was on correctly. They constantly looked out for each other and each other’s needs. It was adorable to watch.  They rode ponies. Abby, usually a Junior Wrangler, took a break so that she could ride at the same time as her friend and be able to spend as much time as possible that day with her.

Sparkles!

After their ride, they went and completed the coloring competition and roamed the ranch. There wasn’t much down-time as then they were off to paint pinecones. The glitter was the highlight of the activity.

Lunch came next and the food was delicious as usual. It gave everyone nice full bellies so adventures could continue. That afternoon, they jumped on the bounce pillow and played on the playground. Then they went on a tractor ride,  explored the ranch a little more, and shared some final giggles before the goodbyes.

We are now planning monthly get-togethers for our families at various locations. It all started with Pine Ridge Dude. It’s such a wonderful place to connect and make life long memories and friendships. We encourage everyone to go see for themselves and perhaps make new friends too.

The Party Painter Face Painting offers professional face painting for parties and events in the Hudson Valley. Based out of Hurley (near Kingston), face painting brings the magic of transformation to little faces into superheroes, unicorns, butterflies and more. Designs can be customized to your party theme, so let her know what you have planned!

The Professional Face Painting Experience-

professional face painting

Abby Girl met Gillian of Party Painter Face Painting at the Harmony Garden School of Music’s annual Holiday Party. So of course, the theme was holiday/winter. It’s great how instead of having to go through a bunch of images in a binder, the choices are displayed right on the table upright. It makes it easier for children to see and quickly pick their favorite design.

I was shocked when Abby picked Olaf. I mean, Frozen is currently one of her favorite movies. However, she also thinks she’s a princess and I’m the majesty. So a snowman was a shock.

princess and queen at Burger King

However, it came out wonderful! In fact, at bedtime, I had to work so I asked her to have daddy take the snowman off her face. She told me she would and well, he was still there in AM. I washed it off expecting a breakout and nothing. Her face was completely clear! In the past when she got her face painted, she wanted it off before night’s end. Side note, wash it off before bed to be safe! You shouldn’t sleep with face paint on.

Face Painting Key Point!

Another great point is how amazing she is with the children. The line kept growing and she remained calm and focused. Each face turned out awesome from Reindeer to Snow Leopards and Gingerbread men. Every child including my own seemed very happy and the parents, including myself, were very pleased as well.

About Gillian-

She’s a mom of a spunky toddler and formerly worked as a full-time graphic designer. Now she’s taking all that art school training and branching out into face painting.

Gillian started earlier this year and invested in some really good quality products because she could see there was a demand in the area for professional face painting. The parents can feel confident that the paints are safe and clean and kids love the magic and transformation!

I’ve had such a great response so far, and it’s been a lot of fun. Face painting is one of those things that kids just absolutely love, and the beauty of it is it all washes away at the end of the day so it’s the gift of the experience, and not another plastic toy.

The Party Painter Face Painting is insured and only uses professional quality face paint products that are safe and won’t irritate the skin.

I would love to paint some happy faces at your next party or event!

Family Memories
Always room for a good giggle

Most of the leaves have fallen from the trees but winter isn’t officially here yet. So what can you do during this “in-between time” at Pine Ridge Dude Ranch? The answer is a lot. There is still a lot to do. However, the one thing that stood out the most during this trip was relaxation. Just taking it easy. Connecting back with family. Making memories. Read below the top ten things you can do to relax at Pine Ridge Dude Ranch.

1. Start to Relax …

Sit by the fire and relax. There’s an indoor fire pit with seating all the way around it. Get a drink at the bar or a coffee from Starbucks kiosk. Abby girl recommends the Shirley Temples from the Silver Dollar Saloon. You can even grab a board game from behind the desk or a color page for the children

If you would rather sit by an outdoor fire, then after dinner head out to the campfire and make some new friends. Abby made a friend at the campfire last time we were there and now they are great friends and penpals! Side note, smores, and sticks can be found by the Chuck Wagon.

2. Get a Massage

picture of rellaxing massage
total zen.

They have multiple services here to get a nice relaxing massage. Treat yourself. You deserve it

3. What can be more relaxing than this face?

goat face
I’m so cute

Go sit in the goat pen. Yes, you heard me correctly. Go sit in the goat pen. It is extremely relaxing to just go be with goats and chickens. It’s like goat therapy. After the goat pen, don’t forget to go stop by and say hi to the resident bull as well. He likes some love too.4.

4. Take a Ride

relax on horse
giddyup

Go for a horseback ride and this time of year the deer are beginning to mate and you might just see them frolicking through the forest or bedded down in the foliage. There are many horse programs for all ages and the wranglers are super knowledgeable and helpful.

5. Ah, a nice relaxing stroll …

stroll
Enjoying the fresh air

Take a hike. Go for a hike around the lake. It’s about a mile. If you would prefer, you can also take the tractor around the lake or take the tractor halfway and walk the other half. You can also hike down past the outdoor fire and down past the bounce pillow and rock wall. You can also just randomly stroll! So many options to just “take a hike.”

6. Just Sit

relaxing in front of television
chillin’

Just take a moment. Sit somewhere and just be. There is even a large television in the main hall where you can sit and relax. I almost fell asleep! Dad did! Sure you can just stay home and sit in front of a television … But, it’s so much better in this rustic, inviting setting. Also, right now, there are also many autumn touches around the ranch that make it feel so fall festive and cozy. Can’t wait to see what they do for winter! It also makes it great for lots of awesome places to sit for photo ops too.

Side Note: Have you seen our video on IG TV where Abby scares daddy while he’s trying to relax? Click here

7. Go for a Dip

The outdoor pool might be closed for the season, however, the indoor pool is open and what’s better than going for a float to relax? If you can’t swim, then just wade in or sit your feet in and sit by the edge. It becomes not relaxing if the lifeguard has to rescue you.

8. FREEDOM!

Higher a sitter and have some alone time. Go to the front desk to inquire about having someone watch your children. I’m with mine 24/7 as a homeschooling mom. So sometimes, it’s nice to just have an hour to breathe.

9. Movie Time

Take in a movie in the Tapederos Room. They have a movie screen in there for viewing the movie. Check the activity schedule to see what’s playing.

10. I like Nightlife …

Owl
A Wise Owl

Take in the nightly entertainment. This trip we took in an educational show from a bird rescue (Wild Mountain Birds) and got to meet some amazing birds! The night before there was a magician (David Haines). There’s always dancing too in the BullRoom Showroom/Dance Hall. I find getting my boogie on very relaxing. So does Abby Girl. Her favorite dance style … Hip hop! So go dance those stress factors away. Sometimes they also have karaoke upstairs and for some, singing a tune is relaxing as well.

Bonus Tip For Relaxing-

Do some arts and crafts. There are always activities throughout the day. However, what a better way to get your mind off of things but to craft! This time around they made Pine Cone Turkeys just in time for the Thanksgiving Season.

And Bonus Food For Thought-

There are many articles discussing how mountain air is so much better for you than always breathing in city air or air at a lower altitude. One commonality is that reducing stress is listed in almost every article. So go take-in that fresh mountain air! Here is a post from HuffPost

A Personal Message-

To be able to go and recharge and reset is awesome. What a better place than in heart of the Catskills at Pine Ridge Dude Ranch. Thank you to the ranch for hosting us. Abby girl very much enjoyed spending her fourth birthday with you. Go to their website to learn more and follow them across social media. trip-to-connecticut

Adventures of Abby Girl is always adventuring. We love just randomly going in different directions very last minute. This last trip, we traveled for a family day trip to Eastern Connecticut.

This post contains Amazon affiliate links and I receive a small portion if you purchase through my links. It helps keep Abby Girl Adventuring!

The Trip There-

Family Day Trip to Connecticut
Just Standing Here …

If coming from anywhere in and around the northeastern section of New York such as Dutchess County, do not take back roads. I thought it would be lovely. We could make little stops along the way. Eat breakfast at somewhere quaint. Nope. All we got were some egg sandwiches in the middle of nowhere, a child whining repeatedly and a very long trip to our first destination. We rejoiced when she passed out in the backseat. My husband gave me stink eye when we ended up turning on the freeway after two plus hours of meandering. Just save the headache and take the freeways to get to your little family day trip.

NATURE’S ART VILLAGE-

fake dinosaur on Family Day Trip
roar

Nature’s village is a great place for preschoolers. The dinosaurs aren’t scary. Well, besides the one in the cage that spits at you. There are plenty of attractions. I recommend going off season or mid-season because it can get pricey. Keep in mind no special price for little ones. Everyone is same price.

Learn all about it here where I wrote a complete blog post about our recent visit there.

Also, if you are dork like me, you will want your child fully dressed for the perfect photo-op. I found a full safari outfit here

too cute

We opted for just a safari hat and a dinosaur t-shirt. There are so many on Amazon and this one, you can’t wear the hat. However, I fell in love with it!

Seriously?

THE BEACH on Our Day Trip to Connecticut-

Tip-

Always ask the locals. I asked a local in the gift shop if there were any free beaches around. She told us to go to Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford Connecticut.

When we arrived, the person at the front booth told us it was fifteen for out of state residents. My husband left and we sat in a parking lot scrolling through a ton of other options. Ultimately, we went back and I talked to the woman. So here is the dirt. We parked in a lot right before you turn into the park. Then we walked to the beach. This cost us nothing. It’s to your left right before you turn in or on your right if go past the entrance.

The beach is small. There is a huge green space where you can have a picnic or toss a Frisbee. The beach has a lot of seashells and cool rocks. However, a lot of the water area is very slippery. My child did slip. So be careful.

dino at beach
Don’t forget your sun hat

There is a giant rock that is also a great photo opportunity. However, some woman kept creeping into the shot. Thank God for ” target=”_blank”>Photoshop. You can either make her disappear or turn her into something else. Dinosaur? I wish I would have brought My ” target=”_blank”>Canon Mirrorless with me. However, my phone did just fine. Next time, will bring the camera. Just remember that a camera ocean water do not mix.

Swimming is also not permitted at this particular beach. So, it’s more a toes in the water type of place. This is just fine as sharks have been frequent this year and you don’t want to have a Jaws reenactment type of situation on your hands. That would seriously put a damper on your trip to Connecticut.

Tip-

sensory tray
different items collected at beach

Collect some treasures and go home and make a sensory tray with them!

Dad’s Restaurant-

Family Day Trip to Connecticut
Dad’s at Dad’s

No my dad doesn’t own a restaurant. It’s an actual restaurant we ate at on the way home in Niantic Connecticut. We got a lot of food for the price. The clam fritters were delicious and so was the grilled shrimp. Not a fan of the whole belly fried clams. Not gonna lie, it was too slimy for me. I felt like I was eating a fishy booger. My husband liked them. The children’s food was also good. I recommend stopping here. It has a nice, beachy feel and some outdoor dining.

Seafood
Yummy

Conclusion-

icecream on a day trip
Covered in Icecream

After dinner, there is a nice little ice cream place up the road. Sorry, dropped the ball. No clue what the name of place is and so, don’t ask.

Then home, just take the freeways and not back roads and end the eventful day trip to Connecticut

Recently, Adventures of Abby Girl headed back to Pine Ridge Dude Ranch for Peace on the Ranch Weekend. This is around our fourth stay since January. So, there has to be a reason and if you go to Pine Ridge Dude you will see what we love too.

This particular weekend was held in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the Original Woodstock. The whole weekend was about peace, love and good vibes. I was trying to figure out what I wanted to write about. Then inspiration hit. What do we love about Pine Ridge Dude Ranch? Overall the place is great. However, one item stands out and that is the staff. Without an awesome staff, I truly feel a place will not survive. They are the heartbeat of the operation. So, I created a little video to highlight them and explain exactly why, Pine Ridge Dude Ranch has such an amazing staff. Enjoy!

Oh and Go See Pine Ridge Dude Ranch for yourself and you too can view first hand, an awesome experience and amazing staff. We recommend making this, your home away from home.

There are some other videos of a previous stay here of Pine Ridge Dude Ranch and a free printable of what to pack for your Dude Ranch Trip here! Enjoy
