There is so much to do as far as family friendly in Connecticut.

According to ctvisit.com, the state of Connecticut is just 110 miles from east to west and 70 miles from north to south. However, there is so much to do in a state you could literally drive a loop around in a day.
It’s not a landlocked state. So to the south you have the ocean and to the north, you have mountains!
There are a lot of attractions to see too and Abby Girl and her family will try to visit as many destinations as possible and this section is where all these destinations will be discussed.

So far some notable destinations we have explored and written about are SeaQuest in Trumbull Connecticut. It’s an aquarium and so much more because they have more than just fish. They also encourage “please touch.” We got to have over one hundred little birds land on us and hangout in the sloth cage.

Museum Village was also pretty awesome. We spent the day hanging out with life-like dinosaurs and taking in dinosaur related activities. Afterwards, we got to hangout at the beach and look for seashells.

We have a list of other places we really want to explore. So stayed tuned. We will bring you our reports as soon as we visit.

So what are you waiting for, go explore Connecticut with your family too!

We have gone to Seaquest Trumbull CT as just a family day trip. However, for Abby girl’s sixth birthday, she got to have a birthday party there! Everyone had a wonderful time! This is a sponsored post.

What is Seaquest?

Many People comment and complain that these types of places are simply mall aquariums with some animals on attraction. That the space isn’t adequate or animals are not cared for properly and this is far from the truth. Seaquest is involved in humanitarian efforts and the whole time we were there, we saw passionate caretakers who really cared for all the animals and took a strong passionate interest in all the species on display.  So, if it wasn’t for a place such as SeaQuest, many animals would not survive. See the full article in Part 1 of the SeaQuest adventure.

Furthermore, it’s a wonderful place to have a birthday party whether you are a little or a big kid and since it’s indoors, you don’t have to worry about inclement weather either to have an animal-themed party.

  • A special encounter with an animal of the birthday child’s choice.

The Party Room

We had around 25 people at Abby’s birthday and there was still plenty of space in the party room. However, we would recommend purchasing a longer slot for the party room. It felt as if it went by really fast. It’s definitely doable because we did food and cake in the first hour. Then they brought the animal. Afterward, the birthday girl opened presents and then time was up. But, you are free to stay and enjoy the animals for as long as you want. You just have to be completely out of the party room.

Keep in mind that it’s a shared party room where two parties up to 22 people each might share the room or you can rent the whole room. We preferred just having the whole room to ourselves.

SeaQuest Trumbull CT

The Animal Encounter at Seaquest Trumbull CT:

They gave Abby a choice of about five animals to pick from for her birthday. She picked the parrot. His name is Ramsey and loved hamming it up for his adoring crowd. Each child, if they wanted, could pose with the parrot on them.

*you can purchase additional animal encounters too for $15 per animal.

Food/Beverage/Decorations

Outside food is allowed. We had a custom cake made from a local bakery. The pizza was really tasty and on time which is important in a fixed time slot. So, we highly recommend Trumbull Pizza Company. For 25 guests, we ordered 5 pizza pies. Two we requested the slices be cut in 1/16th for the smaller children.

Alcohol is not permitted on site.
Balloons, pinatas, open flames (i.e. candles, hot serving dishes) can be used. We didn’t even use decorations. There are two big viewing windows where you can see the fish in the party room and plenty of spots for photo opportunities. The children loved taking photos with the surfboard. What they provided was enough for us and less to clean up.

After the Party Room

Everyone went and spent time exploring all the awesome attractions around SeaQuest. It was nice having unlimited time to explore. What’s really awesome is you will see staff members walking around with animals from time to time too. They are very eager to show you the animal and tell you all about them. They have many types of encounters from land to sea and everything in between. Some cost additional tokens and many others are included with admission. There are some non-animal experiences too such as the simulated hurricane. Then of course, before we left, we visited the gift shop.

SeaQuest Trumbull CT

Additional Add-ons

Marina, the Mermaid can be included in your party at an extra charge of $45 per hour. This is the one thing, I wish I would have booked and didn’t. My daughter loves mermaids.

What are the birthday hours?

SeaQuest birthdays can be reserved any day of the week. The time slots will be dependent on the current reservations but happen on the even hours (10 AM, 12 PM, etc.) We suggest booking as soon as you know the date/time of your event so that your spot is reserved.

Final Thoughts on Seaquest Trumbull CT

For a unique birthday that is great for all, consider SeaQuest. We visited the one in Trumbull CT. However, they have locations throughout the United States. Just remember that each SeaQuest will differ. But, the fact still remains, that this will be a birthday for the books because everyone will have a fintastic time!

Seaquest is an awesome place to adventure with your family. In fact, it is a place families will want to return to over and over again. Every time you go, there is a new experience or encounter. Since a lot of the animals are rescues/surrenders, new animal arrivals are common! We got to meet a few of these new arrivals on our trip to Seaquest in Trumbull CT and had several brand new experiences. This is a sponsored post.

Our VIP Experience-

Last year at SeaQuest we celebrated 1,213 live births from eight species, giving us the ability to help with conservation of endangered, vulnerable & threatened animals.

1Two-toed Sloth
*Threatened Species*

400Axolotls
*Critically Endangered

*4Asian Small-clawed Otters
*Vulnerable Species*

https://trumbull.visitseaquest.com/new-about-us/https://trumbull.visitseaquest.com/new-about-us/

They also are actively involved in community organizations and non-profits supporting the education of children as well as other causes.

The VIP Experience usually allows for up to three VIP encounters and does not include admission price (unless you are a member). However, so we can share all we learned, we opted to do all five!

Snorkel with Stingrays-

Snorkeling with stingrays is a lot of fun. They provide wet suits and snorkels. Don’t forget to bring towels and something dry for afterward. Trust me. I forgot to pack my husband’s spare underwear. Don’t be like me.

You then are allowed to snorkel around this huge tank and look at all the different species swimming around you. Even children can go in and explore. Abby loves it and is only 5. I opted to be the photo taker on this trip.

Hang with a Sloth-

The sloth is so cool. You go and feed him. While the sloth is occupied with food, you can pet its head and belly. Also, be aware, he really likes cameras.

Fishy Kiss Experience-

This is a foot spa where little tiny fish nibble at your toes. Abby is very hyper and didn’t last the whole time. She said it tickled a lot. I found it relaxing despite the fact that they only seemed to like my one foot. In particular, my heel. My husband didn’t try it as he really doesn’t like feet. But, he was a trooper and got plenty of footage of the experience instead.

Asian Otter Interaction-

In this exhibit, people slide raw fish down a tube for the two Asian Otters to enjoy. In the end, people can feed each a mussel in the shell (it’s something new Seaquest is implementing). It’s fun to watch them try to crack them open. The final part is picking out a sparkling rock to put in the tube. They love playing with these and hiding them!

seaquest

Kinkajou Experience-

We went into the party room and they brought in the baby kinkajou. The most adorable part of our visit! People can feed it honey and fruits and vegetables. Be aware that these are very curious creatures. It crawled onto my backpack and tried to crawl in.

Why Seaquest is so awesome for homeschoolers!

Homeschooling is on the rise. Many families who never thought they would homeschool are put in a brand new position. I am one of those parents. I am also one of those parents that believes hands-on experiences are far more valuable than sitting in a classroom with a textbook learning about the same things.

At Seaquest, the people who work there really took the time. They were very knowledgeable about every animal we encountered. The number of facts we learned or they gave us was mindblowing. They give you fun facts too. Not just dry boring ones. That really kept our interest.

Here are a few we learned from Seaquest Staff-

The two-toed sloth goes to the bathroom once every five days on the ground.

The sloth has two toes and you tell by the front claws, not the back. The back claws are all three.

A Guitar Fish is extremely curious and would not leave my husband’s toes alone as he went on his snorkeling expedition with Abby Girl. Remember how much he loves feet (sarcasm)

The nine-month-old kinkajou is on a flipped sleep schedule and loves their sloth stuffed animal in the pouch they are carried around in (yes workers take turns carrying the baby around and it’s beyond adorable!)

Asian-small clawed otters are escape artists. In fact, some escaped from a zoo in England and formed a colony in the wild. I actually researched it when I got home and the fact-checked out!

Britain has a new species of carnivore, living and breeding in the wild. But farmers and country folk can take comfort: this is no sheep-eating Beast of Bodmin. The Asian short-clawed otter, found from India eastwards to Borneo and Java, has established itself on rivers and canals near Oxford after escaping from captivity. Sightings over 10 years have satisfied naturalists that a small population has managed to breed successfully.

Beyond the VIP-

There is a whole bunch of other stuff to see too and interact with too. We shared some of our random highlights in the slide show above. We love that you can purchase tokens and feed a lot of the animals. There is also a great gift shop. Having a birthday here or a special event would be really awesome.

Final Thoughts About Seaquest-

If you are looking for a family adventure that will make memories that last a lifetime, go visit Seaquest in Trumbull. Not from the area? There are Seaquests in other parts of the United States too. In fact, there is one about an hour further from us in the Hudson Valley than the Trumbull location in Woodbridge, NJ. Tag us on social media if you go! We will share your photo in our stories! You can follow Seaquest on social media too. Adventure on!

family-friendly-connecticut-deer-pond-farm

Family-Friendly Connecticut Deer Pond Farm in Sherman, is great for everyone! It’s part of the Connecticut Audobon Society. There are so many trails to explore, ponds, wildlife and it’s so well-maintained.

The Trails-

Use all AllTrails or get a map at the kiosk. We did the big loop which was just about three miles and had to follow our GPS closely. The trails were marked, however, with all the offshoot trails, it is easy to become turned around. This was especially true on the outskirts of the big field. The trail went about three different directions!

Just taking the trail to the two ponds was maybe a half-mile if that from the car. So for a short walk to the field and ponds, this is ideal. In fact, we stopped at the ponds for a bit and then had pretend-pizza time at the field. Abby also completed her victory run here for the Springtastic, Bombastic challenge through Fleet Feet Poughkeepsie. This is a great place to get the energy out too as Abby Girl puts it.

PIZZA VIDEO ON TIKTOK!

There are some ups and downs. Also when we went there was still some ice and lots of mud. Lots and lots of mud that Abby slipped in and well, the only shirt she had was the dog’s sweater that she enjoys wearing from time to time. So watch your footing and bring extra clothes.

Scavenger hunt At Deer Pond!

There is a two-sided scavenger hunt that you can pick up at the kiosk. One side is a lot easier. But, it’s so wonderful that they do this for whoever wants something to do while on the trails. It kept my very hyper child, engaged more than normal and she loved finding things on the map. Some will be easier to find once spring comes around and everything starts to bloom.

Trail Maintenance-

We were stopped by two lovely trail volunteers that took the time to stop and ask us how the trail conditions were. They explained that they help maintain the trails and I explained that they looked really good. I didn’t even see any trail trash or dog poop. We saw coyote poop. But that was it. (no dogs are allowed, but we did see people breaking the rules.)

Scenery and wildlife-

The scenery changed several times. We didn’t see and wildlife or birds on this trip. However, in the spring, we will return and I bet it will be a different experience. Well, my child claims to have seen an invisible frog …

Getting There-

It looked like a residential driveway and I drove right by it the first time. However, overall, it is fairly easy to find. We went during the week and there really weren’t many people on the trails. We went fairly far without seeing anyone. In fact, we even took a break and filmed this lovely piece for Reels.

Finally thoughts-

We will definitely adventure back here again. The distance can be modified to fit how far you want to walk and is suitable for all ages. They have events coming up too and you can also donate to them on their website. We are very pleased that we found this place and got to add it to our adventures. So take the flock and go see this family-friendly Connecticut destination.

seaquest-trumbull-ct

We recently returned to Seaquest Trumbull Connecticut. I wasn’t sure what to expect as we had been there before. However, Abby Girl wanted a Sloth for her birthday and with the VIP Interaction, this dream was fulfilled along with being able to see many other awesome creatures! This is a sponsored post.

What is the VIP Interaction at Seaquest Trumbull Connecticut

At certain time slots throughout the day, you can schedule special interactions with some of the awesome animals. These animals include the sloth, kinkajou, otters, and stingrays! The bundle is currently on sale for $49.95 per person and reservations must be made in advance. You also receive extra tokens to feed the animals. Remember you also still get to interact with all the other animals there as well. So, if you don’t want the VIP interaction, you can still visit a lot of animals and have a blast. Remember food and certain interactions cost tokens to do.

Sloth-

Sloths have gained a lot of popularity recently. My child is obsessed with all things sloth. So to have a sloth interaction for her birthday is just awesome. We went a year ago and the sloth was still really young and never came down. Now that it’s older, it’s a lot friendly and learning to really interact with everyone. You even feed them and when they are eating their food, you can pet the sloth. Right now, the fur is still on the softer side. However, as sloths age, their fur becomes coarser and more matted. No petting the sloth unless it has food.

Seaquest Trumbull CT

Kinkajou-

Part of the raccoon family and acts more like a monkey, this cute creature rocks. The Kinkajou often picks a favorite and loved my husband and even nibbled on his ear. They are super inquisitive and full of energy making a great experience and vastly different from the slow and steady sloth.

VIP Encounter

Otters-

You don’t actually get to pet the otter. However, it’s fun to feed them the shrimp down these long tubes and watching them catch them. They will provide you with gloves. If you are allergic to latex like me, make sure to ask for non-latex.

SeaQuest Trumbull CT
Seafood or is it See Food?

Stingrays-

Thirty minutes in the giant tank! Seaquest provides everything you need. You just have to bring a swimsuit and a towel. The wetsuits are hilarious to squeeze into if you have a mom body like me. I walked like a duck and felt like a stuffed sausage. But, they keep you very buoyant, fairly warm and once in the water, you are a lot more comfortable. They even have xs suits for the smallest snorkelers. Abby wears a size 5/6 and fits nicely into the wetsuit. They also provide snorkels and masks. At first, I was kind of afraid to use one in a COVID world. However, SeaQuest assured me that they take every measure to keep everything sanitized. Abby has a tiny head and, I found her goggles slipped down a lot. But, she still had an absolute, awesome time.

While in the tank, you can snorkel around and look at all the fish, sharks, and stingrays with you. Don’t worry this isn’t Jaws and the stingrays are de-barbed.

They have you sit on the glass tunnel at the far end of the tank and give you food to feed the stingrays. The Stingrays swim up and suck the food out of your hand. At that point, you can reach in and pet them. Occasionally, you might feel one sucking on you. I’m happy to report that I left with no Stingray Hickeys.

The staff worker was amazing with my daughter and took her for several laps around the tank and it made her so happy.

Helpful tip-If you decide to put your feet down, make sure you shuffle so that you don’t step on anyone.

Other Animals Not in VIP Experience-

There are a bunch of other creatures that you get to visit too. But, you have to go visit and see for yourself or watch our video. We might give some more animals away that we interacted with at Seaquest this time!

VIDEO!!!!!!

Final Thoughts-

Located within the Trumbull Mall, SeaQuest is a unique family experience worth trying. So go swim with the fishes and chill with the sloths. Abby Girl is already asking for her return trip!

magical-place-in-ct-hike-bee-brook-loop-trail

Hike Bee Brook Loop Trail in Washington Depot Ct. It’s part of Hidden Valley Preserve and just north of bustling New Milford, Connecticut. It’s also a beautiful family-friendly destination.

Go Hike Bee Brook Loop
I’m a Fish!

The loop itself is supposed to be around two miles. However, our Alltrails didn’t decide to record until we were already partway through our hike. When we arrived, we went over the small bridge and kept to our right. We followed that and saw white blazes. However, we saw a sign that said: “trail closed.” Not recommended, but the water was almost non-existent in spots, so we crossed to trail on the other side through the water. Eventually, there was another bridge over and no signs saying that the trail was closed. It goes up a steep wooden staircase that feels more like something out of Jumanji. We followed the loop around until we got back to the split-off. Just pay close attention because there are several offshoot trails. We passed one more “trail closed” sign near where we started. However, there were people hiking by us and there was nowhere to go unless we added a lot of mileage onto our trek. Our fat dog wouldn’t have made it. So we just kept hiking until we landed back where we started.

VIDEO ALERT-CLICK HERE FOR BEE BROOK LOOP VIDEO

Hike Bee Brook Loop

Key Points-

  • Shepaug River is Beautiful. Lot’s of places to dip the toes and stand on the rocks. The scenery is beautiful surrounding the water and very tranquil.
  • The bridges. are awesome. Abby girl and the dog loved the suspension bridge. The other bridge is cool too because it has a jungle vibe.
Hike Bee Brook Loop
  • Easy to moderate. The hardest part is the stairs winding upward and then some uphill. However, from the river, we clocked around 1.5 miles, and Abby and I were both hiking barefoot with no issues. Lot’s of wide trails and Pine Trees. Also not recommended unless you are used to hiking barefoot and are an experienced hiker.
  • Just beyond the jungle stairs, it does narrow and is the most rugged part of the trip. However, there is an awesome little “mini” cave that we took our break at and had lunch.
Go hike Bee Brook Loop
Lunch break!

Tip: Abby Girl packed the food. She had a small soft cooler and packed a few slices of cheese and bread. She made trail cheese sandwiches and they were really good.

  • The cell service is very spotty and not available for a big chunk of the hike and surrounding area. Make sure you download the map before you go or printout a copy.

Final Thoughts on Hiking Bee Brook Loop

Go early and weekends obviously will be more crowded. However, overall it is truly a magical place. We can’t wait to explore more of the trails within the preserve. From the center of Dutchess County, it’s about an hour drive and worth it.

Hey! Want more hiking suggestions? We try to update our trail guide often. So go over to it for more suggestions!
