free-low-cost-educational-summer-fun-hudson-valley

There are so many ways to still learn throughout the summer and have fun doing it with many different hands-on learning experiences throughout the Hudson Valley. If you’re reading this and live outside of the Hudson Valley, read on because many things I mention here are universal to other areas of the country as well. So get ready for some great suggestions for free educational summer activities in the Hudson Valley!

LIBRARY PROGRAMING

Library programming doesn’t take a break in the summer, and most programs are free! My daughter is currently taking a cartooning class at one of our many local libraries. Tomorrow, both girls (almost 4 and 10) are taking a paper puppet class. Earlier in the week, they both participated in a storytime (more geared to the younger one) and met an amazing therapy dog. They also both created dinosaur-themed crafts. All these programs are at the Hyde Park Library. Many require you to reserve a spot, so check the website!

Last month, my daughter and I went to a lecture at the Lagrange Library on wolf conservation. It was very informative, and we are very excited to visit the sanctuary when it reopens next year!

Summer reading programs. Every library we can think of has a summer reading program for little ones all the way up, with fun prizes to keep them going and a summer end party; it’s a win-win and a great way to keep learning with many free and fun educational things to do with the kiddos this summer.

Homeschool:

Day programs can fill up faster or be more crowded during the summer months. So keep that in mind!

Historical Sites are another Affordable Option to get learning throughout the Summer!

There are historical sites all over the Hudson Valley and yes, tours can cost money, but many have events and self-guided options that are free or very inexpensive to go and visit. The bonus is that many also have hiking trails on site and beautiful gardens to stroll through for some awesome photo ops! Keep in mind too that your local library has passes that can get you into some awesome places such as historical Sites.

In Hyde Park NY alone, the web says there are 25 historic sites! That’s a whole lot of history to go visit in just one town, and many towns in the Hudson Valley have historic sites you can visit for free or low cost.

Art Events

I just saw that the Wassaic Project has free offerings, and during First Fridays in Poughkeepsie, there are some art galleries open to the public, including the amazing street art.

You can register to participate in one of the many artistic categories at the Dutchess County Fair.

The Catskill Cats, Saugerties dogs, and third is escaping me right now. But artists go and create different themes on these animals in different towns, and the artwork is absolutely amazing. Abby Girl’s favorite Catskill Cats were Lobster Cat and Ozzy Cat. You can find her doing improv dances in front of both on our dance YouTube channel. The Ozzy Cat is right in front of the Mc D’s, and I couldn’t help but wonder what the two guys in the window looking out were thinking as she danced around right outside as they munched on their cheeseburgers. See her dance in front of Ozzy Cat Here and Lobster Cat Here

Create Council for thr Arts in Columbia County has a lot of free things to go see and do. Abby has participated in the past as open and active audience at the Bridge Street Theater.

Ballet Collective has a couple of free classes and a free performance coming up this month. The one workshop is for littles, and the other is for adults.

The list goes on and on for absolutely awesome free educational summer activities Hudson Valley!

Take a Hike for Affordable Educational Fun this Summer-

It’s still on here … However, we haven’t updated it in years. But we kept a very lengthy description of every trail we hiked. You can go look through it for some ideas, but check it against something like Alltrails for accuracy because some trails might now be closed. I know the first half of Breakneck Ridge in Beacon is currently closed. But the Hudson Valley has miles and miles of trails. We do review every trail on AllTrails as well and hope to update here as well eventually. For our most up-to-date reviews, watch one of our most recent videos on YouTube- Adventures of Abby Girl.

We spent hours talking about plant life, the animals we see, and the insects that crawl over our feet, and every once in a while, trails (like Vassar Farms) have plaques throughout the woods describing what each tree or plant is.

what-we-experienced-from-a-praise-dance-conference

Abby and I have never been to a conference together. When I started writing this blog many years ago, Abby was much younger. Our adventures were much different. This blog is starting up again with new adventures, new lessons, experiences, and a new little sister traveling along at times, who is a little older than Abby was when I started this blog. However, Abby Girl is now a preteen, and so, we restart this blog with a new tone. Today sharing our experience attending a praise dance conference in Maryland.

What is a Praise Dance Conference-

According to Dancing For Him Ministries,

People call dancing for the Lord a number of different things. Some may say it’s praise dance; others may say it is worship dance; some may call it interpretive dance or expression, while others call it prophetic dance. None is wrong or incorrect. Prophetic dance, however, can take on many different looks or have different interpretations.

So a praise dance conference is a place where individuals who are led to explore this form of ministry can come to learn and grow in their field, as well as grow in other ways, too. I personally had no idea what I was walking into as my daughter and I entered those doors and put on our name tags. However, over the course of the two days, we learned that there is so much to praise dance. Biblical sign language becomes big, beautiful movements, and flags take on different meanings based on their appearance. Everything you do has a meaning and purpose.

mom and daughter

Led By the Holy Spirit-

But there were also times of prophetic dance where the Holy Spirit leads you through your movements as you danced in front of individuals. Sometimes, even being led to certain people. It was a beautiful time where smiles, tears, and breakthroughs happened. I know when I looked over at my ten-year-old daughter, you could just tell she was being led by the Holy Spirit to minister through her dance. She looked so strong, confident, and at peace. It was beautiful to witness. Yes, I cried. But it was a joyful cry.

Learning How to be a Leader-

I’m not much of a leader, or at least I don’t feel like I am. But at a praise dance conference, you learn the techniques and tools to be able to lead and to lead properly in this discipline. Even my daughter, who is extremely shy at first, stepped forward and led adults several times her age. It’s possible because you are in such a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Learn from Others-

While meeting so many people from so many walks of life, you will learn from them if you are open to it. Even on breaks, we relied on others to drive us as my husband had our car. Observing how the other women acted even outside of the conference walls was so inspiring. They also shared valuable advice with us that changed how I think completely and how I needed to change my mindset, or I would be stuck where I am.

In the conference, we learned how supportive and encouraging a group like this can be, and we had over sixty women around us. My daughter was one of the youngest by far, mixed in with adults. No one treated her differently, and they were all amazing with her and really embraced and included her. They never talked down to her, or anything like that. They treated her like everyone else in the room.

Sometimes, in other personal experiences, people will brush off or talk down to the younger ones because they are just kids. But what they don’t realize is these “kids” might just become the ones to really shake up and change the world for the better.

girl with billow cloths

Expect to be changed-

As I mentioned above, I was changed because for the first time in a while, I was in such a glorious place. Something I want to hold onto going forward because it was a feeling I don’t want to let go of ever! My mindset has been totally changed. I went to this conference for my daughter, as she was the one who wanted to explore praise dance ministry more. But now I really want to become a part of it more, too, beyond my modern dance training.

Abby had the biggest shift from the conference. She was moody and argumentative and kind of in a lost state before the conference. She would have great moments and then boom. After the conference, she became calmer, more helpful, and this beautiful spirit appeared.

On the car ride home

she craved Christian music and was leafing through a New Testament Bible, reading out loud to everyone in the car. It was so cool.

Back home, I waited a couple of weeks to finish this post. I am happy to report that the shift is still happening. She looked at her shorts and tossed them aside, telling me they were too short. It was little things like that.

But on a bigger shift, she came to me and said she is now being led to join a faith-based ballet company, and then later on a faith-based ballet studio. Same mission as before, but now with the word “faith” in there.

She also turned down an audition for a summer intensive to join a six-week Christian-based dance ministry near our home with two hours a week in ballet and modern, followed by a performance. She, along with others, will be ministering to the community through dance at the end of the six weeks. This is something I feel our area truly needs.

Even on the YouTube channel I have with her, she has decided to put more faith-based choreography that she creates. Her first Christian-based video in a long time received over a thousand views, a wonderful comment, and new subscribers. It’s also inspired her in her mainstream choreography, playing more with scarves and giving the scarf a backstory/meaning. See where Abby aka Abve is performing next and connect with us! Click here

Many Doors Closed …

Many doors closed in our lives, and especially in Abby’s dance world. But we kept knocking and waiting. Then, this door to this conference at the last moment opened enough that we were able to walk through it and go. It was a lesson in how God opens doors in His time. It’s not up to us. It’s up to Him. I’m a little bit of a control freak, and this was another lesson learned to let go and let God. When I look back on it now, if those doors had not closed, this door might not have opened and opened in when it did. In His perfect timing.

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” Matthew 7 7-8

Are you Looking for a Praise Conference?

Pastor Lynn Hayden has a few more conferences this year and is planning her 2027 season. She also has some amazing resources on her webpage and a whole school where you can study praise dance ministry online (along with other dance options/videos). You can even write her with suggestions of places the Praise Dance Conference can head to next. Personally, we would LOVE to see more praise dance conferences and opportunities right here in the Northeast!

As For US …

We look forward to future praise dance conferences, God willing of course, and are very excited for what He has in store next!

hiking-in-the-autumn

Hiking in the autumn can be beautiful and a lot of fun. However, there are some challenges as well. Read these quick tips on how to have an enjoyable fall hiking season.

1. Watch your footing-

Sturdy shoes are a must. I recently wore sneakers with zero grips in the woods and literally leaf surfed down the descending parts. However, even sturdy shoes won’t always protect you from slipping on leaves. So it is very important to watch your footing.

2. Hidden Hazards-

Leaves can hide hazards in the trail. Holes, roots, rocks, and even snakes can be hiding in the leaves. It all circles back to tip number one, watch where you place those feet.

3. Packing clothes-

I find fall weather unpredictable. Make sure you use layers. It most likely will be a lot cooler in the early morning and towards nightfall. Wicking layers are the best options. Remember your rain gear too for those impromptu fall showers.

4. Don’t be mistaken for Bambi-

Some areas such as multi-use areas and state land are shared with hunters. During hunting season (around Thanksgiving), make sure you wear something orange and not only yourself but your four-legged friends too and children. Check your areas for the exact hunting schedule. For us in New York, we are currently in bow hunting season. I still opt for bright colors because I honestly don’t want to be struck by an arrow. It’s not like being struck by Cupid. It will sting.

According to Brian Higgs, a local hunter there are several fall hunting seasons. You have turkey, bow, muzzleloader, shotgun, or rifle (depending on what county you are in). SO MAKE SURE YOU ARE VISIBLE.

5. Time of Day-

Ever heard of falling back and springing forward? Be aware that it gets darker earlier. We ended up hiking late and got caught at dusk. It was really creepy. Make sure you have all your night-time gear in case you get trapped in the dark.

6. Watch the Children

Watch your children when hiking in the fall. Obviously, you always watch your children. However, you need to make sure they are being smart and following these steps too. Often, kids enjoy running and not really looking where they are going.

7. Trail of Bread Crumbs

Alright, I assume you won’t be using a trail of breadcrumbs. Most likely you will be using an App such as Alltrails.com. However, I find that in the fall, I get turned around easily. The trails just look so different. So brings maps, and use your eyes to look for those trail markers. Remember, some trails don’t even have markers. So fall hiking becomes even more challenging. Really pay attention or you might end up that witches gingerbread house.

8. Hydration on trails

This weather can very misleading. It is often a lot more comfortable to hike. It isn’t too hot or too cold usually. The weather is just right. So, you might not think you need to hydrate. However, you do.

According to Rei,

A good general recommendation is about a half-liter of water per hour of moderate activity in moderate temperatures. You may need to increase how much you drink as the temperature and intensity of the activity rise. For example, strenuous hiking in high heat may require that you drink 1 liter of water or more per hour.

Final Thoughts-

Hiking in the autumn can be amazing. The leaves are changing. The smells are different. There is just so much to experience as long as you remember these tips so you don’t “fall” down on your autumn hiking adventure.

COVID has calmed down a lot. However, visiting destinations now has changed drastically. Businesses are learning all over again. They are learning to work with all the government guidelines in order to open their doors and keep them open. Sadly, if people don’t know what to expect at destinations, they might have a horrible time.

Resort Destinations-

We actually braved Pine Ridge Dude Ranch at the very beginning of July. They did everything the best they could. The website is super informative letting people know what to expect when they are visiting. A lot had changed since the last time Adventures of Abby Girl was there.

At that time, there was still no indoor dining. We ate outside and waited online to be served our food. The food and people were behind protective shields and everything disposable.

Many activities were modified or cancelled. However, it’s a resort and there is still plenty to do. No nightclub. But, dancing and a band outdoors.

Mask up. Masks were required pretty much everywhere. This included entering the pool area.

There was also hand sanitizer stations available. However, parents weren’t watching their kids and sanitizer was being shot everywhere. So if you go, please keep an eye on everyone.

You could tell they were still trying to figure things out. However, they were doing the very best they could under the given circumstances.

Abby Girl was sad because she remembers Pine Ridge Dude Ranch before the Pandemic. The wooden horses couldn’t be sat on. The mechanical horse, she couldn’t ride, no board games or crayons.

Now, that the weather is becoming cooler, it will be interesting to see how they adapt to it and also as government rules and regulations change.

The takeaway was that having an informative website made all the difference.

Many new precautions

Visiting a Museum Type Destination-

Fast foward three months later. Places such as museums are reopening. Sadly, we adventured to Liberty Science Center and had a very bad experience. We are however, excited to visit other destinations of this type as not all experiences are the same.

  • It’s extremely overpriced for what is currently offered.
  • Many of the really fun activities are closed with a little sign informing visitors of the closures or hidden behind curtains.
  • A lot of the programs that used computers in the exhibit were not working. It felt as if the safe is very overwhelmed.
  • Staff approaches young children and tells them to pull-up their masks instead of informing the caregiver standing right there. This is highly invasive.
  • No neck gators or bandanas
  • The food business that was there, left. Now there are vending machines and you must eat outside or can call and have takeout brought to your car. However, if you physically leave the grounds in your car for food, you must repay parking. Rumor has it that they are looking into food trucks in the future.
  • The staff has fanny packs on with comp tickets. We turned them down.

And the takeaway …

The website needs to be adapted better. They do have a page about COVID on their website however, the closures and changes need to be more clearly stated. Honestly, if we have been more informed, we would have done something else that day and not wasted money. Please send us an update if anyone sees things changing here so we can adapt our review accordingly!

destinations in COVID times
So different now

Restaurants in General-

Different states have different rules. Our advice is coming from the experiences we had in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Vermont.

Restaurants have reopened. Bars in New York have to offer food and that means in order to drink, you must eat. We Had to order roasted chick peas when my husband and I adventured to our parents getaway at the Diamond Mills in Saugerties.

A lot of places now have indoor and outdoor dining as well as curbside pickup. If you take the option of eating at a restaurant, there has to be an empty seating between you and other diners. Masks are not required at tables. However, they are required everywhere else. I guess being at a table puts in an invisible bubble shielding people from germs. Sorry sarcasm.

All the restaurant staff wears masks.

When we visited Vermont, we had to place our reservations in advance as every destination is at limited capacity.

Speaking of Vermont Have you Visited Clarendon Gorge? It’s a great destination during these times!

Ahhhh mask free

The Great Outdoors-

Some places tell you that you have to mask up. All places say to pullup your mask when social distancing isn’t possible. There is a trail etiquette to follow now. Sadly, there has been a spike in trail pollution since COVID hit because of the increased amount of traffic. However, the great outdoors is still a good bet. Just make sure the place you want to adventure is open and get there early or go during the week. Many places shut down at a certain capacity.

Whatever you do, don’t be the trail idiot. Read post

Fun Fact:

Did you know that even yard sales are often asking that you wear a mask? However, there are have been plenty recently since most of the spring and summer yard sales were missed.

Watch our latest ride-along yard sale video here!

What you can do when visiting destinations now-

Ask questions. Do research. Go in those mom groups you belong to and see what other people’s experiences were at places. Read the reviews. Call if you need to and even make a list of questions before you go because there is always a plan B. If you have a negative experience, let them (politely) know what you felt went wrong. Everyone is relearning again and it’s not easy. So let’s all hang in there together and adventure on to new cool destinations.

Thoughts from a Travel Agent

Sarah Fredericks of Dreaming of the Mouse has her own thoughts about the current travel situation.

I can’t stress the importance of making sure you and your party have reasonable expectations when choosing to travel and/or visit attractions during this unprecedented time. When you decide on an attraction or destination, do your research. Check the website to see their COVID policies, check their social media outlets to see recent guest reviews, and pick up the phone and call if you have additional questions.

With the current regulations in place regarding social distancing and masks, many businesses are open but operating much differently than you and your family might be used to, in order to keep their staff and their customers healthy and safe. It’s never a good idea to assume that besides the addition of masks, nothing else about your visit will be different. Making sure you know what to expect will make all the difference in deciding if you’d like to visit now or hold off for more “precedented” times.

If you’re considering traveling during this time, I strongly advise booking your vacation with a travel agent. There’s typically no cost to book through one and we are keeping up with the changes, policies, and procedures that are in place to make sure your visit is fun while adhering to health and safety guidelines. Dreaming of the Mouse & Beyond has been working tirelessly with our clients as they make these decisions for their own travel. The destinations we offer have been very clear on health and safety measures that are being taken to ensure a clean, safe and fun visit for all that may be different from past experiences, but still fun and enjoyable!

Final Thoughts

We wrote a post a view months ago about how we thought adventuring to places would go. All we can tell people at this point is that is a very fluid situation. In addition, each state and each country has different rules. All these rules are constantly adapting and changing. It’s crazy times, and we are all just trying to learn to adapt to everything so we can still just adventure on even if looks a lot different now.

magical-place-in-ct-hike-bee-brook-loop-trail

Hike Bee Brook Loop Trail in Washington Depot Ct. It’s part of Hidden Valley Preserve and just north of bustling New Milford, Connecticut. It’s also a beautiful family-friendly destination.

Go Hike Bee Brook Loop
I’m a Fish!

The loop itself is supposed to be around two miles. However, our Alltrails didn’t decide to record until we were already partway through our hike. When we arrived, we went over the small bridge and kept to our right. We followed that and saw white blazes. However, we saw a sign that said: “trail closed.” Not recommended, but the water was almost non-existent in spots, so we crossed to trail on the other side through the water. Eventually, there was another bridge over and no signs saying that the trail was closed. It goes up a steep wooden staircase that feels more like something out of Jumanji. We followed the loop around until we got back to the split-off. Just pay close attention because there are several offshoot trails. We passed one more “trail closed” sign near where we started. However, there were people hiking by us and there was nowhere to go unless we added a lot of mileage onto our trek. Our fat dog wouldn’t have made it. So we just kept hiking until we landed back where we started.

VIDEO ALERT-CLICK HERE FOR BEE BROOK LOOP VIDEO

Hike Bee Brook Loop

Key Points-

  • Shepaug River is Beautiful. Lot’s of places to dip the toes and stand on the rocks. The scenery is beautiful surrounding the water and very tranquil.
  • The bridges. are awesome. Abby girl and the dog loved the suspension bridge. The other bridge is cool too because it has a jungle vibe.
Hike Bee Brook Loop
  • Easy to moderate. The hardest part is the stairs winding upward and then some uphill. However, from the river, we clocked around 1.5 miles, and Abby and I were both hiking barefoot with no issues. Lot’s of wide trails and Pine Trees. Also not recommended unless you are used to hiking barefoot and are an experienced hiker.
  • Just beyond the jungle stairs, it does narrow and is the most rugged part of the trip. However, there is an awesome little “mini” cave that we took our break at and had lunch.
Go hike Bee Brook Loop
Lunch break!

Tip: Abby Girl packed the food. She had a small soft cooler and packed a few slices of cheese and bread. She made trail cheese sandwiches and they were really good.

  • The cell service is very spotty and not available for a big chunk of the hike and surrounding area. Make sure you download the map before you go or printout a copy.

Final Thoughts on Hiking Bee Brook Loop

Go early and weekends obviously will be more crowded. However, overall it is truly a magical place. We can’t wait to explore more of the trails within the preserve. From the center of Dutchess County, it’s about an hour drive and worth it.

Hey! Want more hiking suggestions? We try to update our trail guide often. So go over to it for more suggestions!
