Family-Friendly Connecticut Deer Pond Farm

Family-Friendly Connecticut Deer Pond Farm in Sherman, is great for everyone! It’s part of the Connecticut Audobon Society. There are so many trails to explore, ponds, wildlife and it’s so well-maintained.

The Trails-

Use all AllTrails or get a map at the kiosk. We did the big loop which was just about three miles and had to follow our GPS closely. The trails were marked, however, with all the offshoot trails, it is easy to become turned around. This was especially true on the outskirts of the big field. The trail went about three different directions!

Just taking the trail to the two ponds was maybe a half-mile if that from the car. So for a short walk to the field and ponds, this is ideal. In fact, we stopped at the ponds for a bit and then had pretend-pizza time at the field. Abby also completed her victory run here for the Springtastic, Bombastic challenge through Fleet Feet Poughkeepsie. This is a great place to get the energy out too as Abby Girl puts it.

There are some ups and downs. Also when we went there was still some ice and lots of mud. Lots and lots of mud that Abby slipped in and well, the only shirt she had was the dog’s sweater that she enjoys wearing from time to time. So watch your footing and bring extra clothes.

Scavenger hunt At Deer Pond!

There is a two-sided scavenger hunt that you can pick up at the kiosk. One side is a lot easier. But, it’s so wonderful that they do this for whoever wants something to do while on the trails. It kept my very hyper child, engaged more than normal and she loved finding things on the map. Some will be easier to find once spring comes around and everything starts to bloom.

Trail Maintenance-

We were stopped by two lovely trail volunteers that took the time to stop and ask us how the trail conditions were. They explained that they help maintain the trails and I explained that they looked really good. I didn’t even see any trail trash or dog poop. We saw coyote poop. But that was it. (no dogs are allowed, but we did see people breaking the rules.)

Scenery and wildlife-

The scenery changed several times. We didn’t see and wildlife or birds on this trip. However, in the spring, we will return and I bet it will be a different experience. Well, my child claims to have seen an invisible frog …

Getting There-

It looked like a residential driveway and I drove right by it the first time. However, overall, it is fairly easy to find. We went during the week and there really weren’t many people on the trails. We went fairly far without seeing anyone. In fact, we even took a break and filmed this lovely piece for Reels.

We will definitely adventure back here again. The distance can be modified to fit how far you want to walk and is suitable for all ages. They have events coming up too and you can also donate to them on their website. We are very pleased that we found this place and got to add it to our adventures.
