Five Must-Do Homeschool Morning Tasks

There are must-do homeschool morning tasks that Abby girl tries to complete before starting the adventure of the day.

Morning snuggles

Morning snuggles is the first half hour of day when we first wake-up. It’s a time to be present and unplugged where we just snuggle and watch a television show of her choice. It’s a great time to just relax before the madness of the day begins.

Morning Calendar-

We have a pocket calendar on the wall. Each day we discuss the date and then count up all the numbers. So if it’s the fifth, we count 1,2,3,4,5. We also include the month, year, season, days of week (today, yesterday, tomorrow) and the weather.

TIP- Try fun songs about different parts of the calendar to help with memorization and engagement. Sadly, my child does not like children’s songs and Ozzy hasn’t released a days of the week song yet …

Animal of the day-

We have two bins that have books on animals. I ask my child to randomly pick a book and animal without looking. We read about that animal and then she has to write the name of it in her notebook and create a picture. Usually, I have her include the habitat in the picture too.

Suggestion- Abby Girl loves animals. So that is what is in our bin. However, you can gather books on whatever your child’s interest currently and do the same thing. You can also switch up the books throughout the school year.

Daily Prayer and Pledge-

There is an American Flag hanging in our classroom. So each day, the hand goes over the heart and she recites the pledge with me. I want to maintain some of the more old fasshioned schooling principles and teach her a respect for her country.

Discuss Our Adventures for the day-

We check our secondary calendar to figure out if and what is happening that day. This could be meetup, extra curricular activity, special event. Beyond that if we are hiking that day, we plan out where we are going and what we will need on that hike. This is key for teaching accountability.

We also decide where or not to bring the dog. If you do bring your pooch, be mindful of their ability too. Our dog is twelve and a mile is becoming difficult for her.

Final Thoughts on Morning Homeschool Tasks!-

Obviously, the other things fit in here too like brushing hair, teeth, planning out wardrobe for the day and breakfast (sometimes, as we often eat on the fly at the local deli.) Brushing hair is usually a battle and doesn’t always happen.

However, the five tasks above are a constant. It gives children a level of predictability and routine which is important for them as they grow.
