Barton orchard is an awesome place for an outdoor adventure trip that you can do in a day. We go to their farm store often for rainbow bagels. But just recently, they opened two very awesome treetop adventure courses.
Abby girl got to try out the Koala course. We obtained our ticket at the marketplace at Barton Orchards. We then went for a quick potty break before heading back to wait for the tractor. The tractor ride in itself is awesome and fairly long. We joined a couple other moms with children and headed to the course via our tractor ride.
The Koala Course
At the course, the instructor had all the harnesses laid out and helmets ready. He was awesome at explaining everything and supper helpful getting our gear situated properly. Abby is a tad peanut sized so it takes some cinching to everything nice and secure.
All the children then followed the instructor with the mom’s in tow over a bridge to the koala course.
One at a time, he hooks each child in and off they go. Abby did the course twice. However, many of the other children completed several times. Abby got hungry. So she needed to stop for a food break.
When she got scared or unsure, the instructor was right there to talk her through it as I’m not much help yelling “you got this.” He also held her hand or hands if needed. On the second time down zipline, the instructor even let go of her hand at almost the beginning when she jumped and Abby thought it was awesome!
One of the little boys was also great at helping my daughter and the other girl get through where you have to swing your rope past certain cross points. So remember, if your child is small or doesn’t have much upper body strength, the click through points might be difficult.
After our second time and food break, we said our thank you and headed back over the bridge, grabbed the tractor and went back to the market store.
Back at Main Farm Area-
We grabbed a delicious cookie and a Lipton ice tea and had a snack break. Next, we visited with the menagerie of very friendly animals that are at the orchard. I think they wanted my cookie. Is this like “If You Give A Mouse a Cookie-Farm Edition?” Don’t worry, we didn’t feed them.
After that, we went up to playground. I should never have suggested the “p” word. I sat on bench and let Abby go play with other children. Not five minutes at playground, heard a scream and one of the mom’s brings me my very now bloody child. Blood, from nose, chin, mouth. I should know by now how much a face bleeds from her other daredevil experiences. I used one mom’s phone. One ran for first aid. It was all blur.
To the ER!
I got Abby in car and took her to Vassar ER. Luckily, she ended up being fine. They think mild concussion, banged up chin, cut on inside of lip, nose bleed and some additional bruising. Again, not our first rodeo. We were told she was very lucky and a very tough little girl. We’ve heard that several times too. See one of our earlier blog posts about the great fall. However, just two days later, Abby requested to return to Barton to do the Koala course again. She also got a clean bill of health at doctor and was honestly more concerned about her splinter in her foot.
So it’s highly recommended for children under seven. I also over heard one mom saying to check availability as summer camps will be coming in too to try it. There is a bigger course too for children over seven and a certain size and adults!
As far as playgrounds? Abby said she doesn’t want to see a playground right now. Understandable Abby girl. Understandable.

Fact that she had an awesome time (besides fire pole) and survived everything-priceless
Lesson learned– sometimes if you try something new, it might turn out awesome or you might just get smacked in the face
