Still Hiking; Week 5 of Challenge

By Abby Girl-

Still hiking on right through week 5 of challenge. If you haven’t been following, Abby (age 3.5) and myself are attempting one hundred miles in six weeks. Why six weeks? Well, we are ambassadors for something called, the Get Fit Challenge. So we are doing our own challenge within the main challenge. We hope to inspire people everywhere and especially mom’s, to get out and get fit. So where did we end up during week 5? Read below. We didn’t do too much last week because the weather was not favorable again and we usually avoid the heavy downpours, but this time, we were not so lucky. You can also go back and look at previous weeks. There is a Highlight video for all those too on YouTube.

The River Overlook Trail, Staatsburg, NY

The River Overlook Trail is located at Mills Norrie State Park. Immediately when heading to front entrance, turn your vehicle into parking lot by field on left.

Once we parked and got situated, Abby and I thought the trail was straight to the right down a wide path. It’s not.
Go to through the field and look to your right. You will see the trail going into the fields.

Abby started pointing at the wild flowers and telling me which ones bloomed. Then the ones that were not ready, she would tell me and then the ones that were no longer alive, she would pick, toss away. She would say “this one is dead or got dead.” Need to work on that grammar.

After the wild flower field, you pass an abandoned cabin that looks like it belongs in a horror film. Can’t you picture an evil troll popping out of this cabin?

Eventually, the trail goes into the woods. Abby ran ahead, lost her footing and slammed her leg into a rock. I did field triage and determined it wasn’t broken or bleeding. So I took my bandana and wet it in the stream. I tied it loosely around her leg and put her in the carrier.

She spent the next mile on my back going up and down and crossing various streams. The trail narrowed a lot and there was plenty of poison ivy.

Abby at the mile marker, asked to hike on. So I put her down and we turned around. She grabbed a stick to help her walk. However, not even a limp.

At a stream, she jumped in and practiced her tap dancing. I think this was the point she peed herself. Cold water doea it every time. I say, hiking with wee ones casualty.

I changed her into super hero underwear, no pants as it was too hot and humid. She sang some original songs for me and treated me to several lively performances.

BATGIRL, BATGIRL …

The bugs were horrible even with bug spray. So we took turns with the cool bandanna for rest of trip.

We continued retracing steps back to car.

Peach Hill Park, Poughkeepsie, NY AGAIN-

What is there to say. Her favorite spot to take Noodles. We did our usual red loop trail. But at the big intersection, we went left back toward the car.

If you aren’t familiar with this park, it has lovely trails thoughout an old apple orchard. There is a great view at top of mountains in distance and one wooded trail. Side note, the wooded trail is a great cardio workout.

Vanderbilt, Hyde Park-

The weather wasn’t too great. Like on and off very light rain. So we went for it.

Out of the parking lot, go left and follow past the mansion and hug the woods to right. You will eventually see a trail.

We followed it downhill and eventually, you walk along the road going right and hang another right. The flowers are blooming and very pretty. Abby wanted to pose by a brick wall.

The trail is wide open, flat and very peaceful.

The weather was starting to look nasty so I kept trying to find a cheat trail. Abby kept telling me it wasn’t a trail and go back.

So we were almost to end and it started to rain. It started raining harder and harder. We kept pushing toward the car even ducking under a giant tree hoping it would stop or let up. I put Abby on my shoulders and began booking toward car. She tried to convince me she was taking a shower.

We made it to the car drenched but in one piece.

Bower Park, Poughkeepsie, NY-

Abby loves the playground here. It also has a trail system. A very untraveled trail system that is very overgrown.

She hated the tall meadow grass against her body and other various weeds. So I had to put her on my shoulders.
I was getting so itchy and no protection from beating sun.

“Even though I’m holding flowers, I am still not amused”

We made it to a river and then I tried to press on. But Abby got slapped by a branch to her head and was growing not amused. We turned back around and found a trail that eventually got us on original path. We collected wild flowers before heading back to car. I sadly left our flower bouquet.

Water! Who has a raft?

Mohonk Mountain, New Paltz, NY-

We were doing a promo video with a bunch of other people. It will eventually be a trail for people. Abby led everyone down a path covered on both sides by boatloads of poison ivy.

She got to play with a toad, climb rocks and splash inota of huge puddles. She warned the other children to “get back” before wielding a prehistoric size stick into the water.
It was a good time. Abby was barefoot again and loving it.

Franny Reese, Highland NY-

Franny Reese is an awesome place. To read about this hike, go here. I wrote all about it. Highlights of trip were the baby deer, the ruins and the dogs Abby met. Also a loop trail. We love loop trails.

Conclusion/Final Thoughts-

We had some laughs, special moments and scary moments too. The weather was often against us. However, we are still hiking. Stay tuned for the final week, week 6.
