Browsing Category: How to have Great Educational Experiences

How do we have great Educational Experiences? Well, we are a homeschooling family. Home-school is what we do and with that we have a lot of educational experiences.

In this category, we talk about outdoor education where you can learn about ways children can get an awesome education by using nature as their backdrop.

You can get geeky with us at the library as we discuss all the ways to have a great time at your local library.

Of course, there will be homeschooling posts to keep you on track and give you valuable ideas on how to home-school and have an awesome time.

Abby girl even spent six months in preschool and there is even a post on that. However, six months after starting, she was pulled. On the bright side, it gave us more time to write all about our adventures and have one heck of an educational experience.

A New Chapter-A New Type of Adventure-Abby Girl Goes to school. I was all set to write about one of our adventures, and I’ve been away from blog healing from illness from my fall back in beginning of August. However, to me and to her this is our next epic adventure. Abby goes to school. We home-schooled for a year loosely. Sunday she read six or seven words on her own and is starting to understand different types of money. Now, it’s time for the teacher’s at her preschool to step in and everyone move as a team to let Abby girl grow to her fullest potential.

Abby goes to school and helps mom get ready
please don’t hit me with that thing

Three nights ago I sat in my kitchen labeling all her spare clothes with sharpie. Next morning everything went fairly smoothly thanks to my usual scattered brained self forcing a routine upon myself and enforcing earlier bedtime. My husband took off work and I had my camera in tow taking a million photos documenting every move right down to my daughter trying to blow dry my hair.  It was time to let the birdy fly or in our case, for little mouse to leave the house.

We got her in the car and took her to the preschool where she went upstairs with us and put her backpack away in her cubby. We took her downstairs to the playground and off she ran never looking back. I took some stalker mom photos from afar and then we literally had to force her out of playhouse to say goodbye to us.

We went back home to our furry child Noodles. My husband made me a sad pancake and bacon. I got absolutely nothing done because I wasn’t sad like my lovely pancake depicted. I was more anxious and overwhelmed at the whole experience. So, I laid in the nice silence and put the blanket over my head and watched Unsolved Mysteries. It was a treat as there was no cartoons on, no Baby Shark, no jumping on my head and stealing my breakfast.

The time flew by fairly quickly and it was time to pick her up from school. The teacher said she got a little teary eyed at times and they just reminded her to take a breath and gave her something to do. Then, she was absolutely fine and didn’t even shed a tear when she saw us.

That night we had to go back for parent orientation and it was a whole different child. She literally had the biggest meltdown you have ever seen when we tried to leave her. One of the workers for the evening brought a note with a drawing that said “mommy I miss you.” Shortly after that, a small hyper ventilating being was brought into me and sat on my lap for rest of parent teacher orientation.

So that was Abby girls first day of Abby goes to school. The only tips I have for those who are starting is

A. Get in a routine

B. Organize

C. Prepare for anything.

D. attempt a good night sleep.

Public Library programs
Pete the Cat Story Hr Activity. September ’16. Done by Abby

I hate hearing parents saying things like, “I have nothing to do with my child … There is nothing to do in my neighborhood  … I don’t have any money to do anything.” Almost every town or area has a public library and most programs are free or very little cost.

We started out at only a few months at a mommy and me baby story hour. We’ve been to programs all over our area and yes, if you aren’t a stay at home parent like myself, a lot of the regular programs are not available. However, there are special programs offered by many libraries as well.

Public Library Programs
Plattekill Library,Paleontology Event

We have done bunny yoga at the library, rock climbing to kick off the summer reading season and even a class on paleontology. My 2.5 year old got to not only learn about fossils, but dig for one too. She came home with her own fossil, a little dinosaur, magnifying glass and the program cost me gas money and french fries on the way home. The program was completely free and while there, they signed her up for the summer reading program where she got a goody bag with all kinds of awesome stuff including Unicorn Poop.

Storytime at public library
Pleasant Valley library March ’17

Each story my child hears at the library takes her on a new adventure and with activities often based around the stories, the adventure is that much cooler. One week she’s fighting monsters and the next week she’s sailing the seven seas. Every week is different and every story reader brings their own uniqueness to the table.

She is also learning important educational skills and life lessons. At 2.5, Abby can already recognize some words and letters. She has had children in her class that at that age can even write their own name. Her one library story teacher encourages each child to sign in themselves at the start of the program to support the earlier literacy and writing skills. She is also learning to sit still and pay attention. For a wild adventure child, that is not always easy. But, most importantly, having library adventures is building that strong foundation for a life long love of reading.

Last week we missed her preschool library class but made it up with a special program and this week, we have her regular class and at least one special program. So, I encourage everyone. No matter where you are reading from to get out and have an adventure at your Public Library. Oh, and FYI there are also tons of adult programs too. So you can have a library adventure too!

As always if you liked what you read, show me some love and subscribe to my blog. Also, checkout my always growing library of videos on Youtube and say hi on social media. We have also expanded to https://hvparent.com/adventures-of-abby-girl for awesome travel ideas.

benefits to getting outdoors with children
that’s a lot of stairs. Kaaterskill Falls, Catskills NY

In a world full of technologies, children seem to be more and more sitting in front of some sort of device. The weather is nice, with spring here and summer right around the corner that it’s a great time to explore all the benefits of playing outside with your little ones. All you need is to unplug and get outdoors. My 2.5 year old and I are on an outdoor adventure almost every day of the week in the nice weather and depending on where you are reading from, you may have the advantage of glorious weather all year-long!

1.-When your child is outside they learn a lot.

So when school lets out, education doesn’t have to stop, just get outdoors.  My child has learned a lot of education that she most likely wouldn’t have learned inside too. You ask her what a spider is and she says “arachnid”. You ask her what water is that doesn’t move and she says stagnant. She is learning to count and read a map. We love interactive forests. It’s a fun way to learn about all your native trees, animals and plants. So check to see if you have any near you.

*Local to Hudson Valley Tip: Vassar Ecological Preserve in Poughkeepsie, Esopus Meadows and Little Woods Nature Play Trail at Freedom Park all have interactive forests.

2. Life Skills

She is not just learning all kinds of educational points but life skills as well. She is learning to be strong, independent, and a leader. A lot of times I take her lead and let her direct me where to go.  She is also learning to problem solve like when we come to a small stream she has to cross without falling in or the best route up a mountain.  She is learning kindness and a love of nature and animals around her.

Perseverance is being learned as well. Sometimes on a hike, it becomes challenging just like life can sometimes become and she has to learn to push on and keep going.

One other awesome skill she is learning is trust. The other day, we were on a hike and the trail we were hiking became steep with loose rock. My daughter looked at me and said “mama hand.” She is trusting me to help her navigate. When she felt it was safe, she told me to let go.

3. Outdoors Brings Creativity

Another awesome thing about getting outdoors is creativity. You can climb a pile of rocks and become a mountain goat or an explorer. or imagine what is hiding in the crevasses and little holes in the ground creating an epic story that depending on age, can go home and write about. You can pretend you are just about anything when you are outdoors. Depending on where you are and the rules of where you are, you can also collect things for an art project later on. Some places have a leave-in place policy. So check the rules before you take anything. We are starting to collect rocks to paint and then I am going to write where they are from so she begins a collection.

4. Let’s Get a Good Workout

It’s also great exercise and good for your health. It’s fresh air! Can’t get any better than that. My daughter,  at 2.5, if she wants to, can now solo about a mile and do small rock scrambles. She’s a very strong little girl and loves being outdoors. I know for a fact, when she gets on a device at home, she can become a totally different being. She is so much happier outdoors.

Final Thoughts

From camping to hiking to leisurely walk around your local park or even feeding a llama at your local nature center, the options are endless. Go get lost. Go stick your toes in a cool stream or jump in a big muddle of mud in your own backyard! Become a great explorer. Venture to new places. The skies the limit. Go enjoy the great outdoors. G
