hiker-challenge-the-final-week

Hiker Challenge; the final week. Yes, it’s incredibly that Abby and I have gone through six whole weeks of competition. The final week we pushed as hard as we could.

Sunday-

Rail Trail Rt 55, Poughkeepsie, NY-

After church because Abby wanted Jesus before hiking, we hiked a mile on the rail trail. It was a nice hike and we met Special Boggs. Special Boggs is a dog not a rapper and has its own Instagram account as Special is the mascot for Bases Loaded Training Facility in Poughkeepsie, NY. We got back to the car just as it started to rain. We got lucky on this one and I got some super cute pictures of Abby.

Monday-

Poets Walk, Red Hook NY-

I like this place. Always have. It’s an easier trail. But, a great place for a home school lesson on various habitats.

There is meadow, woods, awesome views and great places to sit and relax. We had fun looking at all the flowers and exploring everything including a tunnel under a bridge.

bridge tunnel

There are usually a lot of people too and dogs. So you aren’t alone. Just watch out for cyclist.

Abby found a little boyfriend her age in the woods so I let them play together for a bit.

We did the loop around so we could see everything stopping at the Summer House and the big pavilion in the meadow.

We then retraced out steps to car and Abby hitched a ride on my back.

Tivoli Bay, Tivoli NY/Hike #2-

This is the same place that there is picture of me out there somewhere holding up my middle finger to the sign after getting lost a few years ago.

Zen

This is our third trip and each time we try a different area. However, that stupid GPS. Just google Cruger Mountain Road. I like this section the best. Well, I used to like this section best.

We parked the car and began down the service road. We hiked to the right and I believe the trail was marked blue. Abby stopped and made an awesome rock sculpture on side of trail. Who needs blocks and puzzles?

After awhile, we hiked on and big middle finger again, there are parking spots at the end of trail. It’s a dead end with another parking lot! We went down one trail that took us to the Hudson. It is a lovely view. Then we went back to main trail and went up yellow trail. Abby was on my back by this point.

Hudson River
Marshland

The trail was very muddy and I kept sinking into this very thick heavy mud. It was mainly up hill with a couple wooden bridge crossings. I kept an eye on GPS and it was running parallel to the access road our car was on. However, at the top, the yellow trail takes a sharp turn to the left! We needed to go right.

Next part I don’t recommend unless you have a lot of training. I yelled, “we are bushwhacking!” It looked fairly even and open so I went for it. Abby was also safely on my back and I could see Baird College to me left. I would stab with my hiking pole ahead of myself and walk. Stab and walk. Just in case any rattlesnakes were in the brush. We dropped down into a river bed and back up other side. I saw an opening into a field and decided field walking would be safer. Tada, a trail.

hut
Anyone home?

I followed it for a bit before Abby asked to walk by some weird looking hut. We walked out to road keeping an eye on the GPS and crossed through a few walking paths before locating the road our car was parking on.

From there we just hiked down to car with the annoying sounds of a weed whacker . That ended that hike.

Tuesday-

Stissing Mountain, Pine Plains, NY-

Stissing Mountain. At first Google Maps wanted me to go to Stissing Mountain Rd. Sorry Google, this is wrong. I followed Hike the Hudson Valley and typed in 7 Lake Rd. Only issue is that coming from the west, the directions to find the trail head are reversed.

We finally found the parking lot and thank you to another hiker. He gave us awesome directions as I was about to trample through a very overgrown trail on wrong side of road.

You cross the street. We did so after playing with an adorable dog and two other people telling us they would see us at the top. I guess they haven’t hiked the speed of a 3.5 year old. So, then you start walking up hill. It is basically a river bed that this time of year (Spring), is flowing water and mud in multiple locations.

hiking on
Up the rocks we go

You not once get a break from the uphill. As the hiker said at the beginning, “ignore all side shoot trails.” We eventually came upon the cairn he so spoke of (big o’pile of rocks in center of trail). This is where it divides and decisions have to be made. The shorter route to the left, is far steeper. The right, meanders and switchbacks more. We went right.

We took a few snack breaks and a mosquito bit my butt as I gave my daughter peanuts on our snack break. Our new favorite trail food. Abby laughed at me. I made a deal with her that if she continued to summit, I would carry her all the way back to the car.

We took a couple short cut trails as I had a basic sense of where the fire tower had to be. So I didn’t completely follow that guys suggestion to follow the trail.

But, we got the fire tower and Abby began to climb. We got about half way up and I got super dizzy. Abby told me I was weeny and she would go back up with daddy.

view
nope

At the bottom, we took another break before loading Abby into the pack. We made it only part way down and Abby wanted to give the very steep trail a try. I was nervous because there was a lot of loose rock and she didn’t want to use my pole or a stick for support. She wanted to do it all on her own. This is why I seriously want to invest in a helmet and harness for her. She’s a daredevil.

She did slip at one point and bounced like a cartoon hitting three rocks with just her butt and stopping. I was slipping too. It’s a crazy trail because it’s not a scramble. It’s just steep with the earth sliding under you.

We took a potty break and I put her toilet on a rock, It ended up flipping over and Abby did a somersault into the brush. I got her up covered in twigs and leaves. She looks at me sternly and says “I told you not to put my potty on that rock!”

Stop for a picture

We made it back down and hung a right retracing our steps back to car. Her shoe became a casualty because her foot fell into a small pool of water. So she insisted on hiking to car in socks and go mad because she had leaves stuck to her feet.

Funny fact about this hike, “let it go” aka Elsa from Frozen spent more time in the carrier strapped in than Abby did.

Wednesday-

Pinewoods Nature Trail, Hyde Park, NY-

We got out of car and followed the trail passed the playground and went into the woods. It’s a nice trail with plenty of offshoots to explore the river and climb the rocks. Abby was the hike leader for most of it and did the whole hike in her dance clothes.

We kept going through the woods until we were dumped in a field. We just kept walking until we ended up back at the parking lot and went and played on the playground.

Wild Childq

Thursday-

Strigham Park, Lagrange, NY-

We got up scary early Thursday. So before music class, we headed over to Strigham Park. I have never been but was able to pull up a map of the trails online.

There is a nice paved track that goes around the tribute garden and loops around the lake. The only nasty thing is all the geese poop.

There was plenty of wildlife from a family of ducks to a fat bunny. It’s paved and flat so nice for anyone.

When we looped around to other side, we stopped and played at the playground for awhile before walking the rest of the way back to the car.

Friday-

Rudd Pond, Millerton NY-

This the spot that I wrote two blog posts about when we took one of Abby’s first camping trips. You can read about them here and here.

The first time I ever hiked in here, I entered from just beyond the camping spot. However, this time, we hiked all the way down the main road to the red end of trail markers. We then hiked into the woods following the red trail.

It was very, very overgrown. In the first 3/4ths of a mile, I pulled eight ticks from my legs and shoes. We took a couple breaks and just before the mile maker, I put her in the carrier for a bit.

trail sign
How far shall we hike today?

You come to junction for the white trail. Go right if you want to continue your loop around. Go left to see a view and add just over a mile to your trip.

I made the decision to go to the left to see a view. After fighting biting things, poison ivy, ticks and other stuff, I wanted the view!

I have definitely see better views. But, it was a nice spot to take a break and have a snack before venturing onward.

view
The view from lookout point

Abby walked again and I taught her to look for bear rubbings on the tree and scat on the ground. I kept smelling a large animal, so I wanted us on alert. However, Abby told me a bear did not make the mark on the tree, a beaver did. Then looked at me and said, “chomp, chomp.”

We continued on and got back to where the red and white split off. Don’t follow the random red trail to right before that or the second red trail you came up on … Stay on the white and march to your right.

We ran into a guy with two small dogs and I warned him that near summit there might be a bear and said hi to the dog’s before we hiked on.

child smiling
Feels good to be Oh Naturale

We played on some branches and eventually were following water. Our second stop at the water, Abby decided to skinny dip and dared me to, also. I decided to be boring and just took off my shoes and socks.

We followed the trail to the pond on your left. Pay attention because you don’t want to keep going around the lake. Take the trail to the right which, will most likely be overgrown too.

Eventually, we arrived at campground. Road walked back and instead of leaving right away, we went to the playground.

Side note, we saw lots of frogs on this hike. I believe I was frog peed on three times. Exciting and useless info. Your welcome.

Peach Hill Park, Poughkeepsie, NY AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN-Hike #2-

What can I say? We completed the exact same trail as we have done a million times before. Seriously, besides seeing a frog, this hike was totally uneventful.

Saturday-

Mills Mansion, Staatsburg, NY-

We weren’t going to do any hiking today because Abby had her first dance recital, but she really wanted to go. So, I picked somewhere easy but has nice spots to play next to Hudson River. The place is called Mills Mansion.

We parked in the lot and followed the road down. We took the first path at the bottom and went exploring before using the bathroom.

Then we got back on road, followed that and went past a wedding that was being setup and onto the trail.

We took the first cut off and dropped our stuff. We took off our shoes and socks and played in Hudson River. It was awesome because it was low tide. We got to see a snapping turtle at the far end of the beach.

The tide was coming back in, so we played a little more before putting Abby Monkey on my back and walking barefoot to the car.

It was an awesome final hike for the challenge and a beautiful day.

still-hiking-week-5-of-challenge

Still hiking on right through week 5 of challenge. If you haven’t been following, Abby (age 3.5) and myself are attempting one hundred miles in six weeks. Why six weeks? Well, we are ambassadors for something called, the Get Fit Challenge. So we are doing our own challenge within the main challenge. We hope to inspire people everywhere and especially mom’s, to get out and get fit. So where did we end up during week 5? Read below. We didn’t do too much last week because the weather was not favorable again and we usually avoid the heavy downpours, but this time, we were not so lucky. You can also go back and look at previous weeks. There is a Highlight video for all those too on YouTube.

The River Overlook Trail, Staatsburg, NY

The River Overlook Trail is located at Mills Norrie State Park. Immediately when heading to front entrance, turn your vehicle into parking lot by field on left.

Once we parked and got situated, Abby and I thought the trail was straight to the right down a wide path. It’s not.
Go to through the field and look to your right. You will see the trail going into the fields.

Abby started pointing at the wild flowers and telling me which ones bloomed. Then the ones that were not ready, she would tell me and then the ones that were no longer alive, she would pick, toss away. She would say “this one is dead or got dead.” Need to work on that grammar.

After the wild flower field, you pass an abandoned cabin that looks like it belongs in a horror film. Can’t you picture an evil troll popping out of this cabin?

anyone home?

Eventually, the trail goes into the woods. Abby ran ahead, lost her footing and slammed her leg into a rock. I did field triage and determined it wasn’t broken or bleeding. So I took my bandana and wet it in the stream. I tied it loosely around her leg and put her in the carrier.

Hiking still even injured

She spent the next mile on my back going up and down and crossing various streams. The trail narrowed a lot and there was plenty of poison ivy.

Abby at the mile marker, asked to hike on. So I put her down and we turned around. She grabbed a stick to help her walk. However, not even a limp.

At a stream, she jumped in and practiced her tap dancing. I think this was the point she peed herself. Cold water doea it every time. I say, hiking with wee ones casualty.

I changed her into super hero underwear, no pants as it was too hot and humid. She sang some original songs for me and treated me to several lively performances.

BATGIRL, BATGIRL …

The bugs were horrible even with bug spray. So we took turns with the cool bandanna for rest of trip.

We continued retracing steps back to car.

Peach Hill Park, Poughkeepsie, NY AGAIN-

What is there to say. Her favorite spot to take Noodles. We did our usual red loop trail. But at the big intersection, we went left back toward the car.

If you aren’t familiar with this park, it has lovely trails thoughout an old apple orchard. There is a great view at top of mountains in distance and one wooded trail. Side note, the wooded trail is a great cardio workout.

This hill looks familiar

Vanderbilt, Hyde Park-

The weather wasn’t too great. Like on and off very light rain. So we went for it.

Out of the parking lot, go left and follow past the mansion and hug the woods to right. You will eventually see a trail.

We followed it downhill and eventually, you walk along the road going right and hang another right. The flowers are blooming and very pretty. Abby wanted to pose by a brick wall.

Rat Face

The trail is wide open, flat and very peaceful.

The weather was starting to look nasty so I kept trying to find a cheat trail. Abby kept telling me it wasn’t a trail and go back.

So we were almost to end and it started to rain. It started raining harder and harder. We kept pushing toward the car even ducking under a giant tree hoping it would stop or let up. I put Abby on my shoulders and began booking toward car. She tried to convince me she was taking a shower.

We made it to the car drenched but in one piece.

I Didn’t Melt

Bower Park, Poughkeepsie, NY-

Abby loves the playground here. It also has a trail system. A very untraveled trail system that is very overgrown.

She hated the tall meadow grass against her body and other various weeds. So I had to put her on my shoulders.
I was getting so itchy and no protection from beating sun.

“Even though I’m holding flowers, I am still not amused”

We made it to a river and then I tried to press on. But Abby got slapped by a branch to her head and was growing not amused. We turned back around and found a trail that eventually got us on original path. We collected wild flowers before heading back to car. I sadly left our flower bouquet.

Water! Who has a raft?

Mohonk Mountain, New Paltz, NY-

We were doing a promo video with a bunch of other people. It will eventually be a trail for people. Abby led everyone down a path covered on both sides by boatloads of poison ivy.

She got to play with a toad, climb rocks and splash inota of huge puddles. She warned the other children to “get back” before wielding a prehistoric size stick into the water.
It was a good time. Abby was barefoot again and loving it.

Franny Reese, Highland NY-

Franny Reese is an awesome place. To read about this hike, go here. I wrote all about it. Highlights of trip were the baby deer, the ruins and the dogs Abby met. Also a loop trail. We love loop trails.

Conclusion/Final Thoughts-

Highlight video can be found here-

We had some laughs, special moments and scary moments too. The weather was often against us. However, we are still hiking. Stay tuned for the final week, week 6.

Mom and Daughter Hiking Challenge; Week 4. Attempting one hundred miles in six weeks. Have you read the past three posts or watched the videos? You should get caught up. Doing it all alongside the Get Fit Challenge.

Week Four had some major challenges from weather to an insanely challenging hike up to Lamb’s Hill in Fishkill, NY. Issues were minor from pack sores to cramping toes to potty accidents. But, we hiked on and made it through week four. Here is a summary of each place we went.

Monday –

James Baird State Park, Pleasant Valley, NY/Hike #1 –

Very warm and muggy today despite being morning still. So, We parked in the lot and then following the road to the right, we saw the red blaze. As a result of the weather, the trail was still very muddy and flooded. Our area has encountered lots of rain recently.

Hiking Challenge
Muddy Fun

Our dog is old and out of shape. Therefore, Abby and I didn’t want to hike her too far. However, both enjoyed the flooded trails immensely.

When we got to the first cut off to the left, we took that and headed down to a bridge. We got directions from some other hikers. They told us to stay on the trail and follow it. The trail opened up into the field across from the car. We crossed the street and were already back at the car. The trip, just under a mile. Abby was so warm after the hike that she laid down in a puddle in the parking lot.

After a chuckle from a new hiker parking her car and a very drenched child, we went home. Always pack extra clothes.

Cooling off Fun

Madam Brett State Park, Beacon, NY Hike/ Hike #2-
We decided to meet Abby’s best friend at Madam Brett State Park in Beacon, NY. However, arriving early, we decided to get in a quick hike. So we took the trail to the left and went down and checked out the waterfall. We didn’t proceed on because you have to do the cat like reflexes to get to the next section of trail. Read about the trail beyond this point here.

Waterfall at park
Walk in the woods

We went back to the parking lot and still had more time. So, We took the trail to the right that crosses over the bridge and goes down past the abandoned buildings on the right hand side. We walked all the way down to the train. On our way there, we saw two deer that were very close to us and Abby really liked seeing all the wildlife, including lots of birds.

Hiking challenge
wildlife and nature

Retracing our steps back toward the car, we sang an original Abby song. This was a very musical week. This song title is “I Love You.” You never would guess I’m a singer by how purposely out of tune we sang. We took the offshoot trail and went down to the waterfront and Abby put on an impromptu performance on the platform by the water.

Stopping to dance on boardwalk
Gotta Dance

We received a text that our friends would be there very soon. We met them in the parking lot and redid the trail to the left. They decided they wanted to go to a different park so the girls could play more freely. So we went back to the car and that was it for that hike

Hike #3 Long Dock State Park, Beacon, NY-

Hike number three was very short because the weather was starting to look horrible and ominous off in the horizon. We didn’t even make it a half a mile. However, we did get to go down by the shoreline and the girls were able to throw rocks add sticks into the water. Sadly, there’s a lot of trash at this beach. I worry about that. There was also a dead fish that I got a great picture of lying there.

After not much time at all, the rain began. We ran for the cars. Abby protested because she doesn’t mind a rain hike. FYI the epic storm never happened.

Tuesday-

Val-kill Eleanor Roosevelt, Hyde Park, NY-
Tuesday we only did one hike and it was about a mile and a half. We got out of the car and followed the trail over the bridge The trail is on the right hand side in the handicapped parking lot. We hiked down there and took the trail to the right instead of going up to the cottage. it’s a loop trail, which, is nice because then it doesn’t get boring.

There wasn’t much to see on this trail but we were able to work on our home school lessons which was an added bonus. Abby came up with a great original song again called, “Trees Don’t Have Hair or Wear Underwear.”

Hiking challenge
Decisions. Red loop or visit to cottage?

Wednesday-

Fishkill Ridge Trail to Lamb’s Hill, Fishkill, NY-

Epic hike for the week and definitely trumped all the other hikes we had gone on. we had attempted this hike a few seasons ago and only made it a half a mile up the trail before turning around. Both Abby and I got sick and trail was very slippery. We were determined this time to make it all the way to the top.

Having Diarrhea in the forest is a hiker nightmare. Last time it happened to me was hiking the Appalachian Trail for days and I found a soda in a stream that a Trail Angel left. I acquired a candy bar too. After, living on granola for a week, it left me in a pine forest half way up a mountain very sick. So I didn’t want a revisit since this time I was surrounded by poison ivy, instead of pine needles. Fact, neither are a good option when blowing up in the woods.

The Trail Up-

Following the trail from the parking lot, we started the uphill climb waving goodbye to the car. Abby wanted to stop at each log sticking out of the road to pretend she was flying an airplane or driving a car. She loved to climb the boulders on the side of the trail. We kept a watchful eye out for rattlesnakes and I made sure to take the opportunity to teach her all about rattlesnake bites so that should be more careful.

Hiking challenge never easy
Views and Trail challenges

We did make it the whole entire loop and saw all the views. We climbed up Lamb’s Hill and made it back to the car. Abby put on a wonderful show very close to the car by singing lots of original songs. This was definitely a highlight of the trip. Could have done without the potty accident though. There was a song about that too she created.

Abby on the Trail-

What stuck out to me on this hike, was the leadership and strength I saw from this 3.5 year old girl. She was hike leader for a lot of trip. She would announce “I’m hike leader” and make me follow her. In spots where I was struggling, she was right there cheering me along and pushing me forward.

On the way back, I walked past a drop off with a view. She stopped me and said, “no the trail goes down there.” I shrugged it off and a little bit down trail, I looked at my GPS. You know what? … The child was correct. I admitted she was right and I was wrong. Her reply , “I told you so mommy.”

She also knew to hold hands when she needed to do so and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Truly impressed me.

Read a complete trail right-up with directions here.

Thursday-

Farm Lane Trail, Hyde Park, NY-
Thursday we hiked the Farm Lane Trail which is nice and also great if you like to bicycle ride or run. We usually take off on a side trail; But this time we just stayed on the main path with Noodles.

Noodles kept jumping in the waters and getting all swamp nasty and Abby loved smelling all the flowers on the side of the trail. A lot of them were her favorite color, yellow.

It was getting warm and we didn’t want to overwork the dog. Just over the half-mile mark, we turned around and headed back to the car.

Flowers on trail
She loves yellow flowers

Friday-

The Great Swamp, Pawling, NY-
It was yet another fairly short hike at just over a half a mile. But it’s a beautiful place to go if you haven’t been right off Route 22 in Pawling, New York. It’s actually the Appalachian Trail at the train station.

Following the boardwalk, you see lots of different types of birds being flushed out of all the tall reeds in the swamp. We took lots of breaks to take in all the noises add sites. It was like the swamp was alive. At the end of the boardwalk, I decided to turn around instead of going up into the woods and following the Appalachian Trail further.

Abby spend some time on the shoreline looking and watching and tossing rocks. Her boot accidentally ended up right on the edge of the water. I cringed because I saw poison ivy right there and I’m highly allergic. Yes, I did end up getting it on my ankle rescuing the boot. Side note, don’t forget your socks. It doesn’t make for a pleasant hike.

After she was done at the water’s edge, we retraced our steps back playing games along the way and watching the birds flying around. Abby went down to the water that flowed underneath the boardwalk a couple times and decided she needed the potty not five minutes from the car. Dangling her over the boardwalk was a funny site. Both of us with out feet planted firmly on the ground. Bare hiney dangling in mid-air. A hiker walking by cracked up. However, it’s better than peeing on the boardwalk.

After that, she played by the water a little bit more before walking back to the car. We made a final stop at the train station platform.

We Wrote all about the Great Swamp and the Great Fall about a year ago. Read it here.

Saturday-

Lake George, NY-
Hiking or walking doesn’t always have to be just in the woods. We decided to go up to Lake George as a family on Saturday to take in the sights. We parked the car and walked all over and managed to do over three miles even going down to the lake itself. Sadly, I only recorded three of the miles on my GPS and so that is all I am counting. Blog post about Lake George Day Trip on A Budget-Here.

Conclusion-

This ended a very eventful week 4. Two more weeks to go. Hike on. Video can be found here. We like to call it Original Songs By Abby Eve Week.

Hike Challenge Intro-

Week 3 of Hike Challenge was an interesting one. I was at some of my highest moods and lowest this week. We went on some awesome adventures. However, the rainy weather was putting a serious damper (no pun intended) on our hikes making us not reach weekly goals. However, at the end of the week with husband by our side, we had our best week yet at almost 14 miles covered. We have also almost crossed off all the hiking locations on the Get Fit Challenge in Dutchess County! I also got two ingrown toenails this week and fell off my basement stairs. But, we hike on.

If you are totally clueless to what I’m discussing, let me catch you up a bit. Abby Girl and I are setting out to hike one hundred miles in six weeks by picking locations on the Get Fit Challenge and beyond. I’m reminded about an old blog post, “It isn’t about the goal, it’s about the experience.” So no matter what, we will have taken something from this experience whether we make it or we don’t. However, my daughter and I are competitive and would love to meet our goals! Here is week one and week two to get you up to speed. Also, there is a new YouTube video every week (week 1 & 2). At the end, we hope to have a full length documentary. So let’s talk about our week three locations!

Monday-

Locust Grove, Poughkeepsie, NY

Monday was high kicks and rain showers at Locust Grove in Poughkeepsie, NY. Abby girl had a major urge to practice her high kicks numerous times and wanted mom to join in the fun. It has been years since I did a high kick. I have to say, not too bad for my old dancer-mom body. Nothing even clicked or popped.

hike on
hike on

Abby girl tossed a lot of rocks into the Hudson River and we saw geese. We carefully walked around them as the male goose was sizing us up a bit. I didn’t want to get goosed.

The rain showers weren’t too heavy and the bugs weren’t too horrible. So overall, enjoyable hike. The air got a tad cool for my ears. So I put my scarf up and looked like I was fleeing my homeland. But, it’s a great hack. Always carry a bandanna or scarf. They have so many uses. Do I hear future blog post?

Mom with scarf on head
I’m fleeing. Just not sure what.

But, if you want directions, start by parking the car and walking through the gift shop. Follow the road and go past the pet cemetery. Then follow the signs for the trail. Open the big gate and go in. Then you can choose your trails. We followed down to the Hudson River. Then followed a bunch of trails left kind of following the Hudson. Then we walked up the trail and eventually hung a left and that brought us back to the gate. At which point, we retraced our steps and thank God, no animals from the grave yard were there to greet us. My child awhile ago, pulled a trail map from here and was talking about the big rocks (grave stones) and how there were werewolves.

Hiking with Noodles the dog
Who is walking who?

Noodles the dog, our favorite chubby senior puppy and first born daughter joined us today. She can’t go for super long hikes anymore and water features are always a must when she hikes. Abby held Noodles leash for most of the hike. Nothing too exciting happened. We saw a strange man swaying with trees in the forest. If you are reading this, hi. We went the other way even though we do hug trees now and again. We just don’t become them. Feels like a bad exercise from an old acting class I took long ago.

Hike Challenge
Be the trees

We did the loop around. That is, parking in the lot and following the path to the left of the parking lot to the trail. It’s a steep hill on the right hand side. Follow it down until it forks. We went straight and when that ended, we took a left and followed the loop around. We did wander off the trail to the Hudson River once or twice.

Stopped at the Hudson River and Noodles got all kinds of weeds stuck to her nose. She looked like swamp puppy. Then we went back to the car where I said hi to some park rangers and had a great conversation with another person who worked there. He had a dog that went toe to toe with a bear or should I say, paw to paw? He wished us luck on our journey and we were off.

Peach Hill Park, Poughkeepsie, NY/Hike #2-

Abby and I had a nice sunset hike meandering through the different trails at the park. I just needed to get back to car before sunset. I didn’t want my car locked into the park. I honestly can’t give directions. We just go in and wander. We pick various trails every time. Use the map or GPS if you feel turned around.

Meeting dogs at park
Hello my friend

Abby met a couple dogs and made friends with them. She also stopped at the summit and had a lively conversation with some bugs on a bench. Yes, my child was talking to bench bugs. No judgement here.

We made it back to the car with plenty of time and really enjoyed our lovely hike.

Thursday-

Mills Norrie State Park Staatsburg, NY/Hike #1

Thursday we went to Mills Norrie State Park. All I can say is this hike got weird.

We didn’t make the goal I wanted and my child had to poop within a half mile of leaving the car. Yes, I left no trace. I always curb my child. That wasn’t the reason for the short hike though. It was the damn water.

We followed GPS up to a parking lot and it wasn’t a white trail. I honestly don’t remember the color. However, we did eventually find the white blaze and took that for a bit before heading back the way we came.

The “seriously?” Face

We got to a couple points on the Hudson River after exploring some old ruins and she had to stop and toss sticks into the water. Then a dog showed up. So she played the dog. I took some pictures for the dog owner and sent them to him later. He said he no money to pay me. Seriously, you run across a photographer in the woods and the photographer will ask for money?

Then the second beach location and Abby got hungry. She also decided she wanted to drive a speed boat or go on one or something. Go ahead, I get so sea sick. Not an adventure I really want to take. She then decided she needed “uppies.” I ended up putting her on my back and trekking back toward the car. Abby turned me into an airplane and a horse. I honestly, feel more like a pack mule.

Water’s Edge

Back at the car, we were greeted by a truck with lots of senior men in full camouflage that appeared to be legit. They told me to wait in place and gave me the all clear. The side of the truck said marine militia. My husband asked why I didn’t ask them what they were doing. I’m sorry, in case stuff was going down, I really just wanted to get my child out of there. They appeared to be looking in trees and the bathroom. Perhaps Yogi lost his picnic basket or Smokey the Bear got disgruntle. No clue. Perhaps the men escaped from the local nursing home. We will never know.

Tymor Park, Unionvale, NY/Hike #2-

I had extra time before Pony School so I decided to put Abby in the carrier and do the k loop at Tymor. K loop is the loop that is apart from the main park.

I thought, she would take a nap since in between hikes, she went to the playground for two hours. However, I was wrong. After a half mile, she decided to get down. We ended up trail running the last half mile and did it in fifteen minutes. I don’t run. However, I guess I’m going to start. Nothing else too exciting about this hike. It’s a nice, wooded, loop trail. We went around one flooded section on the trail. So I don’t have anything else to write.

Nuclear Lake Yellow Trail. hike challenge
Nature’s Playground

First this week it was militia and now gun fire. Yes, gun fire. Oh and rain. We took the access road up to the yellow trail. To get there, don’t park in the Appalachian trail parking lot. Go to the first road down from there. From Poughkeepsie, it’s a left onto old rt 55. Park in the lot on the left. Walk in.

Once on the yellow trail, Abby did a nice rock scramble. There was also lots of flooding and that meant mud. We took advantage of the mud and smeared it under our eyes and down our arms for extra bug protection.

Looking fierce in the forest

However, the further we got on the trail, gun shots became louder and louder. At first, I was taking videos because with the mud on our faces and the gunshots, I felt like I was in a Rambo movie. Then it got really close. So I hid behind a tree with Abby and called Brian. I held up my phone and he said that’s really close, get out of there. A local gun club was practicing and even though it was just bird shot, I didn’t want us hit. Abby also thought it was thunder because it was raining fairly hard by this point. So we took off at a very fast pace as Abby yelled “I don’t like thunder, I don’t like rain.”

Shoe in mud
Not the Keen!

She ended up getting stuck in the mud. Her Keen came off her foot and began to disappear into the mud. However, we never leave a fallen Keen behind and rescued it. She wore it wet to get over the scrambles. We made it to the access road and I put her on my back for the last stretch. We never played at Nuclear Lake. No becoming radioactive hulk monsters this week. Just kidding.

The Return to Peach Hill Park, Poughkeepsie, NY/Hike #2

Epic times on hike
Epic times

Mudfest! The absolute highlight of this trip to Peach Park as Abby calls it was all the mud. Lot’s and lot’s of mud. We ended up stopping by mud and a stream coming from the pond. I tossed a mud pie at Abby and I’m a horrible mom, it hit her in the side of the head. This started the great mud fight. Poor Noodles wasn’t even safe from the flying mud and splashing water. It was a very productive hike. This was definitely, day of the mud. We played for awhile and then got back to the car covered. I did my best to save my car from the mud. The best is, you can just meander through the trails in the park. We are yet to get completely lost. Turned around, yes … But, not lost.

Saturday-

Freedom Park, Pleasant Valley, NY/Hike #1-

Pirate ship at Freedom Park
Ring that bell

Saturday was not dull either. We did the interactive trail called Little Woods. It’s just past the playground going into the woods or you could backwards like we did this time by walking up the road and behind the maintenance shed and a house. Stay to the trail to your left.

There are plenty of stops to learn about different nature topics. However, the highlights were Abby putting me on a time out in a tepee, played musical instruments in the woods, looked for fairies in a fairy village, reading a story by the stream and we stole a pirate ship. They were coming after us and we were trying to get to Mcdonald’s for chicken nuggets and fries after taking the pirate’s ship. Her best friend was supposedly in the forest too (not really). Perhaps, she was with the tree pirates. Yes, the pirates were in the trees.

So it was a lot of fun. We also trail ran again. We stopped at the playground. My child touched dog poop and asked what it was. Another mom was fast with alcohol wipe, hand wipe and lotion. We ran back into the forest to ride a turtle (fake one) and then went to the playground for a little longer before heading home.

Red Wing Recreation Area, Lagrangeville, NY/Hike #2

I was never very sure about this hike location because there is a big closed gate and a long, desolate road beyond that gate. So, I brought the husband along. The husband who doesn’t like to hike and has no good hiking shoes and was wearing heavy canvas workpants in the blazing, humid heat.

Snack Break

We crawled through the gate. The husband, went around it. So it wasn’t like we were breaking in or anything. We hiked down the road and went into the woods right after the bridge. I had directions, however, I just asked a lady walking her dog. It was just easier. Just keep going right. Follow that trail right and then it loops up and does some switchbacks. We walked with a road to the side of us for awhile before the trail hung a left and then more right. Just follow that winding trail.

It was a lot of uphill. In fact, to the view point, it was almost all uphill. I’m not used to Abby being on my back for anything steep anymore. So I was dying and trying to not look as if I was dying because I’m the hiker person. There were also hilarious signs on the trees. Someone has a sense of humor.

Tree sign
Thank you for the info. That could have been dangerous

We took a break and thank you God, Abby decided to walk the rest of the trip. She ran a lot of it. Abby made sure everyone in the family had walking sticks. We looked like some weird family of the deep woods. The Hermit Higgs … The Higgs Hermits …

We eventually made it the top and the view was really nice. I could see the shopping plaza on rt 55. It was like a tiny little blop. We had a snack before meandering around a giant tower and heading down the access road. We had to remind Abby several times to not run too far ahead. I honestly think it was like those cartoons when a creature gets running and just can’t stop. We also saw a skull. Most likely raccoon not human and stopped for a quick look. Impromptu home school science lesson.

Skull in forest
Where’s the rest of him?

We made it the playing fields. Sadly, we left our ball at home. So no random soccer game today and headed back to the road we started on. It’s a right went you get to the road.

Conclusion and Video Link-

This was the conclusion of our week number three. Really, glad we could end it as a full family minus Noodles the dog. Hopefully, soon the Husband can get a pair of Keens too. Then he can hike on too.

Stay tuned for week number four. We will try to keep you entertained. Here is the highlight video for week #3

Monday-

Depot Hill Multi-Use Area-

Hike challenge
Here we go

Monday we went to Depot Hill Multi-Use Area. and parked across from some giant tower. We then followed the Blue Blaze Trail down to the Appalachian Trail. Then we turned right to head toward Georgia. We didn’t make it that far today. Just to the view point on Egbert Mountain. I keep calling it Eggbert Mountain. But, it should be called Buggy Mountain. Swarms even with bug spray. Abby girl sprayed my back and got a little over zealous and soaked my shirt with bug spray. Yep, still swarmed around me. But luckily they were more of an annoyance than anything.

This trail had a lot of ups and downs. Some small scrambles and a nice little black water pond from too much water that looked as if Swamp Thang should boogy on out of it. The view was good too. It was a fairly clear day which helped to see really far into the horizon.

We also made a stop at the Morgan Stuart Shelter just before the summit. Abby decided to sweep the lean-to and we signed the book. There was also a lovely picture of a penis with hairy balls on the shelter wall. Luckily, Abby just saw the weird cartoon guy next to it and I didn’t have to explain what was pointing at it.

Standing inside a lean-to
I could sleep here

We played many games along the trail including, “mine” which is where Abby holds onto one side of the stick and mom the other and we scream “mine” back and forth as we engage in tug of war. This is an Abby original game.

Abby also enjoyed standing by logs with holes and yelling, “wake up bugs.” I told her the bugs were in there taking a nap.

She spent maybe a quarter of a mile in the pack. Sadly, our pack is very uncomfortable for her at this point and hurts her legs. It’s duct taped and dinged up. We can’t afford a new one, so it’s this or hike on little one. When she was on my back, it was helpful because she’s a tiny monkey and picks bugs and crap off me that I can’t reach.

Overall, good hike. Just very buggy and I got a really random sunburn on the top of my left boob and my right shoulder. No clue how that happened. Also, don’t take a bath and wash your hair before going on a hike. Especially this time of year. The bugs were loving it. Oh and I got a new hiking stick and didn’t leave this one behind. Abby girl picked it out for me. It’s all twisted and weird like me. Onto next hike.

Tuesday-

Dover Stone Church-
Hike was quick one. We drove up to spot and were welcomed by a bunch of no trespassing, no parking signs around the parking lot. A tow sign too. Only the trail was open. So we parked down the Rd at the elementary school. There were no spots so I parked on end and prayed for no ticket. we then walked back to the trail head and began.

Dover Stone Church
The beginning

We hiked down the stairs, through the trees, passed the rushing water, over the bridge and to the spot with the trail maps. I really wanted to do loop. However, we didn’t have time as my tiny one slept in. Hiked to cave. She leaped over rocks with ninja like skills. The water was flowing hard and very noisy. We both have noise sensitivity issues. So after a couple minutes of screaming at each other over the roaring water, we retreated.

We headed up and explored the ponds. We tossed some sticks and dandelions into the pond and watched them float around. On way back, Abby spotted an animal first. I thought it was a ground hog. Abby thought it was something furry too. We were both very wrong. We flushed out a big, fat turkey. She was on my back at this point and encouraged me as I hiked up about 41 stone steps. Yes, I went full on Rain Man and counted them out loud … ever single set.

Magical spot

We went down to road and walked to car parked at elementary school. I was glad to see no ticket. So thumbs up as good spot to park the car.

Wednesday-

Ferncliff Forest, Rhinebeck, NY-

After dance today, we went up Ferncliff Forest in Rhinebeck. I was hesitant to go to this hiking spot because last time I was here with Abby, my GPS went nuts multiple times. Abby also said she saw ghosts. We both had a weird feeling last time we hiked this location. In fact, we wrote about it here and here is a video. But, here we were again.

This time around, was fairly uneventful. We played at the pond and I found a huge toad. Abby got stuck in the mud and her dance tights got nasty. She insisted on hiking in dance clothes and her Keens.

Frog on hike
Ribbit

After I got her changed, she wanted to head to the fire tower. She stick shopped on the way up and it was like a weird version of Goldie Locks. “This stick is too big, this stick is too small, this stick is just right.” She even found me one so we could gallop up the hill on our sticks.

At the fire tower, I was so relieved that I was able to convince her to wait for Daddy. I’m very afraid of heights and didn’t have a change of underwear. No seriously, I will get paralyzed with fear.

Hike challenge
Not gonna happen. Nope.

We had a snack and decided to catch a different trail down. She got on my back shortly on way down. She was afraid of the mountain bicycles. One made her jump a mile in air on way to fire tower. She became very obsessed with following a particular mountain bike because supposedly it would lead us out and back to car. Not the case.

We ended up passing a lovely sign that said, now leaving ferncliff forest. I walked down for a bit because it said follow the circle trail back into forest. I never found it and ended up back tracking.

After drinking the last sip of water, I trudged on. Thanks Abby.

Eventually we found our way back to car and even passed two random gnomes on the side of trail. One had a sign that said “beer garden this way.” I wish.

I’m looking at you

The orange trail and a couple others were not too clear. At one point, the orange trail went three directions. I was so hot, thirsty and sore I almost stepped on two snakes. But, luckily, thanks to GPS and the map I took a pic of on way in, I got back to car.

Burger Hill Rhinebeck, NY-

I wish there were burgers on this hill. We were driving by and I told Abby that this is our next location. Since she rode a good chunk of last hike on my back, she insisted on doing this trail too. I told her no carrier. She had to walk. I was so happy we stopped for drinks and pretzels.

We played freeze dance and Abby kept making herself fall in grass on way up. We also flushed out some awesome looking birds.

Hike on over the hill
That’s a big hill

At the summit, she jumped from rock to rock. Each rock has a guide to what mountain peaks are in the horizon. We then played a rousing game of hide and go seek before trail running down the backside.

Abby picked dandelions for Fre and Fre the hermit crabs. Then we stopped at pond where she intentionally stuck her foot in the pond scum.

After a short while, we were in car and on way back home. She asked to go on a third hike and I had to turn her down. Tomorrow is another day.

Thursday-

Peach Hill Park, Poughkeepsie, NY-

We pulled into our house and I just honestly wanted to go in and relax before driving her to pony school. Abby had other plans. She wanted to hike with Noodles.
So I picked a spot nearby called Peach hill Park
She didn’t use the pack at all and walked the dog most of way. The highlight of trip was her getting climb in the trees in the old apple orchard.

Friday-

Winnakee Preserve, Hyde Park, NY-

There was a call for rain. But, Abby again was the cheerleader and wanted to get some of a hike in. We went to Winnakee Preserve, in Hyde Park NY.
We did the red loop which was just under a mile and we got attacked by bugs and played a big game of bear hunt. She also had me rescue all the red salamanders off the trail.

Towards the end, we got caught in a pretty good rain and Abby tried to convince me that was her bath.

We got back to the car and she asked to go on a second hike. Instead, we went to the grocery store.

Saturday-

Mary Moore Preserve, Sharon, CT-

I got my extra pack already for a bigger adventure. We leave shockingly early and head to Mary Moore Preserve in Sharon CT. I opened the door and Abby and car seat was covered in yogurt. After a quick change, we got out and situated.
We were greeted by cows and an electric fence.

Hike on
Don’t Touch And Definitely don’t pee on it

It was very windy outside making it cold. We started climbing this big hill following the blazes. She was just not feeling it. We got into the woods and I had to put her on my back. It just was climbing and climbing and more climbing. We made it to the lookout and despite the wicked wind, the sky was so clear, we could see all the peaks off in the distance.
I wanted to hike on but she was just not happy. So we called it a day and headed back. Besides, both of my calves ceased up on way up and I really was having issues with them on uphill climbing.

I stopped at a sign to a random tree on way down. Never found the tree on the offshoot trail. So we went back on main trail and followed it back to car. FYI I googled this and I guess it is special type of Oak Tree. The land trust removed other trees that were crowding it. I honestly, only read the blurp on google.

We said goodbye to the cows and Abby was upset because they didn’t say goodbye back. Not five minutes down road and she was out cold. I was going to go for a second hike but she was catching flies.

Last Thoughts and Video Link-

I didn’t think a hundred miles would be difficult to achieve in six weeks. However, I’m on around our 23rd mile. Between the weird weather and that now has us hiking in light rain and the challenges of being a mom, business owner and proud owner of a 3.5 year old; adds a whole other layer of challenge to this. Determined, we hike on into week 3. Video link
